About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Traveling through France, the UK, and beyond - visiting permaculture farms and research projects, presenting at some conferences, and exploring!

ABOUT ME

I think the cardinal virtues are: smart, funny, thoughtful, and kind - in no particular order. I'm curious and adventuresome and I like broad ranging, exploratory, critical conversations.

I'd have a hard time deciding if I'd rather be roaming the woods, exploring a city, teaching a workshop, getting pulled into a kitchen dance-party, or overthrowing capitalism. Or napping.

For the past several 7 years I've been in grad school, so I usually put off the decision by working more. But now I've defended (hurrah!) and it's time for some exploration.

PHILOSOPHY

Be good to people. Search for truth. Fight for justice. Have fun. BE fun.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Right now, by surfing!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Been surfing here and there all over the US, over the course of about 18,000 miles of driving for my field research. It's been wonderful, and I'm so impressed with the quality of folks who participate in this community.

Interests

I'm just finishing up my PhD. I've been studying an approach to sustainability called permaculture. I count myself very lucky to be studying something that I'm personally and passionately interested in. I also teach about permaculture and related topics outside of the university, where I focus on the connections between grassroots sustainability and social justice movement building.

I love great conversation, hiking, listening, potlucks, foraging wild foods, playing percussion, and living room dance parties. I like rhythm. I organized an all-recycled drum corps for my union. I like singing in groups. Just about any kind of song, that most of us know at least half the words to.

I'm seriously into science and politics.

Music, Movies, and Books

Quirky, smart, apocalyptic sci-fi. Books on ecological design, whiteness and anti-racism, complexity, evolution, theoretical biology, cybernetics, history, economics. In my weaker moments: terrible pulp sci-fi.

My weaker moments arrive with alarming frequency.

I like LOTS of music.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Driving 18,000 miles around the US to visit 48 permaculture sites as part of my dissertation research. So many beautiful landscapes and wonderful people, and every farm so different from the others!

Teach, Learn, Share

I love to learn from people about the subjects that grab hold of their curiosity and don't let go. What have you spent an insane amount of time thinking about and working on? Tell me :)

I like to cook (and eat).

I'm pretty good in for a woods walk, looking for edible wild plants and mushrooms. Especially mushrooms.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Stories, meals, curiosity, jokes, multivariate statistics, dance moves, drinks, joy.
