About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Utilizing potential to maximize a dream

ABOUT ME

Hi there, I'm Rand.
I very much enjoy the forest. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I hike on a daily basis. I live in it, I go to school in it. There is are 2 eagles that live in a tree in my back yard, which happens to be filled with ancient Douglas-fir trees.

I love good music, good books, and houseplants. Well, all plants really. At school I studied Business, Community Development, Alternative Economics, and Labor History, web development, and herbalism.

I'm really into technology and the philosophy around it. I want to develop a world based in love and compassion. Sharing is the way of the future. I'm a vegetarian and I love cooking delicious foods with the people I live or surf with.

I love to dance. A lot. I have studied Orissi dance, which is the oldest form of Classical Indian dance. Now I am more into ecstatic dance. I dance with my community every week. Want to come? I love to hike, and swim, and sing, and climb trees, and take photographs, and talk about the future, and stay in the now.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I love CouchSurfing. I went on a walkabout a few years ago and really stepped into my life and my path, and I know myself more through the friends and adventures I've been blessed with. I'm always interested in sharing with people. Whether thats a story, dinner, or a place to sleep. Kin you are welcome here anytime.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

The first time I used CS was in 2005. I randomly signed up for it and a week later I had my first surfer. He was a really nice guy who from Thailand. His bar had been totally razed by a massive tsunami, he was a refugee backpacking to Alaska to work in the fish canneries, he wanted make enough money to rebuild his life. What an initiation. I hosted for a long time, until a few years ago I decided to backpack down the west coast. I stayed with folks all along the way. It made me who I am today. I am so grateful for the friends, the experiences, the gifts, and the hospitality. It is truly amazing to trust a stranger. Making yourself vulnerable like that opens you up for really deep and lasting friendships. So thankful!

Music, Movies, and Books

I am fascinated by deep cultural roots. I love electronic music made with ancient melodies and instruments. I love the idea of bridging the gap between the modern world and the wealth of our human cultural heritage. I love all music really. But especially music that is rich in meaning and context.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Backpacking in the Cascade Mountains alone for 3 months.
Sailed on a tall ship circa 1770.
Been a trucker and seen almost every state.
Backpacked every national park in Washington State.
visited 46 states
Rode a motorcycle on a 2 week 4000 mile trip
Helped start a cultural district

Teach, Learn, Share

I know a lot about the plants and history of Cascadia. Im excellent with computers, fixing them, or helping people figure out answers to their questions.
I have studied the Cooperative movement for many years. So have a lot to say about that. I am a founding member of a community development organization, a cultural district in the city and am really passionate about building it.
