About Me
CURRENT MISSION
Sinking farther and farther into the couch.
ABOUT ME
I'm a super-friendly, down-tempo, socially liberal guy trying to live well and simply. I'm 49 but sort of ageless--my girlfriend Katie is 30, my roommate and good friend Meg is 22, and most of the people in my social circle are 20-something or 30-something, if that helps. I've lived all across the U.S., and I've held a wider range of jobs than almost anyone I've ever met. I was an art major, and I remain on the artistic, creative end of things. I'm gregarious and love a good conversation, but no one would ever describe me as loud. As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing like enjoying good beer/wine/coffee with a (new?) friend while considering all the possibilities! Some travelers try to see as many important sites in a city as they can possibly squeeze into their visit. My travel style is not like this--while it's great to see important sites, I also like simply absorbing a place by walking around, hanging out in a cafe or pub, and spending some time just enjoying wherever I am at the moment.
PHILOSOPHY
Mark Twain: "Always do right; this will gratify some people and astonish the rest." I like this.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I've only surfed once but have hosted quite a few people. I REALLY like the idea of CS being more than just a place to sleep--I look forward to meeting new people locally and abroad and hopefully making some great friends along the way!

Music, Movies, and Books
I like literary fiction. I don't get to the movies often, but am happily entertained when I do. Music-wise, most stuff from electronica to bluegrass is cool with me.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
None of these things are amazing or important, but I've had a weird and fun collection of experiences. For instance, some random things I've done include teaching middle school, having dinner at the White House, working in a Chinese candy factory, singing on a Broadway stage, laboring on a citrus plantation in the Virgin Islands, acquiring several U.S. patents for textiles, captaining my university's tennis team, designing/building a timberframe guesthouse, and rescuing my two cats.
