About Me

I was raised in upstate New York and grew up with a huge appreciation for the outdoors and traveling. For the future, I'm applying to medical school and my passion is in tissue engineering -- growing people new organs!

My parents took our family around the US and Canada when I was younger, but it was a trip to France that cemented my desire to travel and experience other cultures. I fell in love with the way little things were different, and came to appreciate how much we shared.

I spent the second half of 2014 travelling across America for a wine job in California, and the first half of 2015 making wine in Australia, then travelling across Australia, New Zealand, Bali, Thailand and China. I've grow a lot from my travels, and now have memories and friends from around the world.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm on Couchsurfing in the hopes of meeting some cool people in cool places. The people I've met in my travels have already taught me so much and I look forward to learning more as I continue to travel.

I want to explore as much as I can before diving into med school, and I think that Couchsurfing brings together the kind of people I'd like to meet: people who are friendly and happy to share a bit of their way of life with someone new.

I'm excited to spend time with people who may be able to show us a bit of their city, but I am also very good at entertaining myself and finding things to do.

Interests

Food: I like to keep my food interesting and learn how to use new ingredients often. Always down to try something new.

Wine: I've been making it for a handful of years now on my own, and for a year I produced it in California and Australia. I love the stuff and am happy to talk about it as much (or as little) as you like.

Outdoors: Hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, scuba, rock climbing. I love a beautiful view (mountaints, oceans, whatever) and appreciate all the seasons.

Music, Movies, and Books

A taste of my favorites:

Music: I love most kinds of music and stay pretty busy on Spotify. I've played piano and guitar for many years, and I'll sing along after a few drinks. Always game to talk chillwave and hip-hop or debate which version of Amy Winehouse's Valerie cover is best.
Radiohead to Nas to Washed Out, Bon Iver to Miguel to Third Eye Blind, with a little bit of everything in between.

Movies: I like movies that make you think. I love shocking twists and "visually striking" films but I also appreciate the occasional low-budget slasher film.
Usual suspects, Tree of Life, Fight Club, American Beauty, Her, Taken, Quentin Tarantino films

Books:
Vagabonding, 4 hour workweek, Incognito, Shantaram, Survival of the sickest, The Way of the scout.
Lots more but start with those.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Made it across the US in 7 days with two of my best friends. Mixing up big city experiences with the great outdoors, we: had deep dish pizza in Chicago, explored the Badlands, drove alongside a running herd of bison, watched a sunset from the buttes of Wyoming, stood on top of the Rocky Mountains, swam in a glacial lake, slept in the desert of eastern Utah, went to 3 national parks in one day, saw the best view of the stars (supposedly) in the continental US in southwest Utah, stood atop Angel's Landing, blew a hundred bucks in Vegas, and ate fish tacos in Venice Beach at our destination.

Teach, Learn, Share

I've never been known as shy or quiet. I'll discuss anything. I've got stories for days, but I'm also quite content to sit and listen.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I will cook you (hopefully) delicious meals. I cook in a lot of different styles with a lot of ingredients and am happy to try new things. I'll do the dishes too.

I would love to chat music, movies, books, philosophy, etc. Many of my fondest memories are specific conversations with good friends in various parts of the world.
