About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Live close to nature and in harmony with the neighbours

ABOUT ME

I love to travel....but the way I think about traveling has changed a lot in the last few years. I came to this town here in Frisia with the idea that this would be the beginning point of a journey around the world, but I ended up moving to this town :-) I learned that you can also travel within a small town by getting to know the people, the language and the culture or that you can travel from the beginning to the end of a project. Though I will probably never loose my curiosity for what's there to discover beyond the borders of my own town or country.

Be warned though I am not as wooly as I may sound..I like watching soccer games in my Dutch orange t-shirt too for example ;)

I sing in a band and I have my own company, Studio Humbel in which I initiate, tell and pollinate humble stories. I founded an NGO, called Libje! (Frisian for: Live!) which is a journey to learn about living with nature and the neighbours.

PHILOSOPHY

Be yourself

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

For one, I will promise to be a splendid guest. I always bring Dutch specialities to friends from abroad, so expect some stroopwafels, gevulde koeken or Dutch cheese accompanying me. Also, I like to cook, so if the ingredients are there I can try to make you something Dutch ;)
When in my place, I'll do the same but then as a hostess :-) Plus I can show you around, and teach you about local stuff.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I think it is a great opportunity to get know a lot of people around the world, and mostly...to get off the beaten track while traveling....do as the locals do!

Interests

Nature, sustainability, adventure, traveling, snowboarding, skiing, yoga, natural health care, gardening (anything eatable mostly), art, culture, crafts, cooking, singing, listening to music, going out and dance :-)

Music, Movies, and Books

The best Dutch ones according to me:

"Ciske de Rat" and "Simon" (anyone that wants to see some real Dutch movies; watch these! They may be available with subtitles)

Saw "Taare Zameen Par" in India, made me cry, I thought it was a beautiful movie. Other movies I enjoyed/appreciated:

Eternal Sunshine of the spotless Mind, Amelie Poulain, Slumdog Millionaire, Into the Wild, The Notebook (very romantic and sentimental ;)), the Broken Circle Breakdown, I love arthouse movies

Books.....Kafka on the Shore and Shantaram are books I really enjoyed.

And music: I don't have a genre, I like something or I don't. I am always interested in local music, live music and I love festivals...
With our band we sing (mostly contemporary) folk, country and soul. Like songs from the Staves, the Pierces and Katzenjammer.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Well something rather funny, instead of amazing: I once jumped of a nine meter rock in Corsica, but since the rock was kind of edgy, I was a bit afraid...Because of that I completely froze right after the jump and in the aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah position hit the water, meaning with my legs and arms not straight down but in another frozen position...the result of this jump was a blue mark on my but, which kind of looked like the map of Corsica...so at least we didn't get lost afterwards!

And..I went to see a movie in Mumbai, and was really surprised when, just before the movie started, all the people around me stood up and started singing the national anthem!
