Interests

The outdoors - clambering, diving, running, hiking, catching butterflies (for science, obviously, they never get hurt). Also books. I'm addicted to the written word. I can't sit down without reading something: including trashy magazines, cereal packets, instructions.... Music and dancing - i'm learning the fiddle and love any kind of partner dancing.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I was paddling the Yukon with a couple of friends a few years back. It was August, so it wasn't getting very dark at night. But we camped on a gravel bank in the middle of the river, and about two hours after dark the northern lights showed up. We weren't expecting them so we couldn't believe what we were seeing at first. I felt like the gods came down to earth and danced across the sky just to celebrate life. I don't believe in any gods, so this was a strange impression for me to have, but it felt so immense that it felt appropriate. I slept out and watched them most of the night. It was one of the most special things i've ever experienced.
