About Me

Spontaneous, reckless, open-minded.

I have been a freelance (self-employed) web designer/developer running my own business since June 2016. This choice was made because I didn't want to be told what to do, and risk devoting my time and energy to something I wasn't passionate about or believed in.

It has been tough/frustrating/upsetting/worth it. The hard times have been dwarfed by the independence I've had, the ability to set my own schedule, force myself to be disciplined, and to improve myself.

I am living in a hostel in Brighton, England, with an amazing group of travellers and fun-lovers. I feel very lucky to have such a life, and find it incredible that others find it strange and odd. If you like going against the status quo, we're going to get along.

Ultimate Frisbee is my sport of choice! It's what I hope all sports can work towards: self-refereeing and spirit of the game. It throws 'sportsmanship' out of the window because it doesn't carry substance. When you are refereeing yourselves, you have to be honest - something I see less of in mainstream sports.

I am from the countryside originally, and I will always appreciate nature and what it provides. However, I also like the bright lights of the city and the thousands of individual stories that are walking around. Hopefully if you are reading this, it means I may have the opportunity of hearing your story.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

The fact that you and I are both on couchsurfing means that we are both wanting to meet new people.

We also both expect, I think, to meet people who are 'different'. People who are comfortable with the idea of trusting strangers in their own home, because we ultimately believe that people are good. That's what separates couchsurfers from the airbnb'rs and hotels - we are focussed on the people, not the money.

I look forward to having my own place to allow people to couchsurf!

Interests

I have volunteered in the last few years: Last year I helped refugees in the Calais Jungle and contributed to the Amnesty International programme at University.

I am an amateur photographer in my free time and my biggest focus is wildlife.

I'm alright at Ultimate Frisbee! I started when I began University and since have played at club level and international level, representing GB U20s at the European Championships in 2012 - the sport is really stimulating and has a great, open community.

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm a big fan of folk, jazz, and 'chill music' - though I do like to dance once in a while to something more upbeat!

Movies. A few classics: Into the Wild, Captain Fantastic (recent!), Easy Rider, Remains of the Day, Good Will Hunting, LOTR, Fantastic Mr Ripley, Trainspotting, Fear and loathing in Las Vegas, Goodfellas, The Great Gatsby, Pineapple Express.

Books? My reading reflects my interest in travel too. The most impactful book I've read this year was On the Road by Jack Kerouac. I loved The Rum Diary by Hunter S Thompson. Into the Wild is a classic - especially as the author, John, had so much in common with Christopher McCandless.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

A spontaneous 3-day road trip to Eindhoven for Dutch Design Week in 2015; this was with one person I'd only met a few times, 4 people I'd never met, to go and stay with more new people in the Netherlands. I only decided we should go with 4 days notice!

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you how to build a website!

I'm a confident public speaker, so am always happy to help someone get better at doing that - I think it's a fine skill to want to improve!

I've been told I'm good at general life advice, so feel free to start the conversation and I'll see what I can do!

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can share my ears. I love listening to peoples stories. I'm still starting out at creating my own, and will share them if wanted.
