About Me

I am from Britain, practice yoga daily and continue to travel around the world, am pescatarian, have no vices and present myself in a friendly way. I'm normally based in Tanzania between Oct to June and Copenhagen from June where I've lived half yearly for over 20 years.
I'm a handy man and can put my hand to most odd jobs.
I can afford to pay my way where food and other expenses are concerned.
We look forward to hear from you.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I've been a member since about 2017 and began realising how useful it was in Lebanon, in, 2018, after attending a meeting. So I'm inspired to start using it myself now too. We had a fabulous day out in Baalbek. Guesting and hosting sounds like fun too.
I've hosted thrice and been a guest several times too now.

The Whiteness of Power -
Racism in Third World Development and Aid
by Paulette Goudge

This book examines the way in which much ‘third world’ aid, far from contributing to the prosperity of recipient countries, helps to shore up global relations of domination and subordination. In particular, Goudge focuses on the role played by ‘race’ in discourses and practices of development, and on the impact of unacknowledged (and often unconscious) assumptions of white, Western superiority. For example, the unequal distribution of resources that results from global power imbalances is often attributed to the inferior capabilities of the black poor. Goudge worked for some years as a volunteer in a ‘third world’ country, Nicaragua, and this book is the result of her subsequent reflections and research. Her research involved in-depth interviews with development and aid workers and her analysis also draws on as well as her own experiences recorded in diaries kept throughout her stay in Nicaragua. She submits her material to stringent analysis and finds much evidence of unconscious attitudes of superiority – with uncomfortable echoes of the assumptions of the colonial epoch. This is a courageous work, in which Goudge questions her own beliefs and actions as much as those of others. Indeed it is her contention that in scrutinising the motivations of those of us whose intentions are good, we can discover a great deal about the global operations of the power of whiteness.
