ABOUT ME

I'm a longtime couchsurfer looking to reengage with the community in coming months. My wife Amy and I are traveling through South America for four months, and we are hoping to connect with locals wherever we go through couch surfing. We are both curious, social people, and we really like getting to know new friends. Couchsurfing has been an important part of every trip I've ever gone on, and we want to keep it up!

I grew up in Portland, Oregon, and Northwest values are important to me: environment and community, broadly construed. I've lived in Argentina and the United States.

I'm a fairly serious person, but not excessively so. I like engaging conversations in small groups and occasionally find myself lost at big gatherings: despite a fairly high level of self-confidence, strangers still intimidate me a little.

Soy un couch surfer hace muchos años, y tengo ganas de reconectar con la comunidad en los meces que vienen. Mi esposa Amy y yo vamos a estar viajando en suramerica para cuatro meces, y tenemos ganas de hacer enlaces con gente de couchsurfing. Somos curiosos y sociales, y a nosotros dos nos gusta conocer a nuevos amigos mientras viajamos. En cada viaje de mi vida, couchsurfing ha sido super importante, y queremos que siga siendo así!

Nací y crecí en Portland, Oregon, EEUU, y los valores de el noroeste me importan mucho: ambiente y comunidad, en líneas generales. He vivido en Argentina y los Estados Unidos.

Soy un poco serio, pero no muy serio. Me gusta hablar con individuales y grupos pequeños, y a vezes me perdio en fiestas y grupos largos: aunque soy seguro de sí mismo, gente desconocido todavía me intimida un poquito.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've hosted a number of people in Eugene, and have surfed a couple other places in the US and Latin America. I've also surfed all over Europe and Turkey.

The best: probably with my friend Zeynip in Eşkişehir, Turkey. She invited me to spend the end of Ramadan with her family, and I was immediately welcomed with effusive, mostly-understandable Turkish greetings and delicious food. In short, I immediately felt like part of the family.

Just last fall, Amy and I met up with Zeynep in Istanbul, seven years after meeting her for the first time. It was great to reconnect with an old friend–Couchsurfing has the power to create lasting connections.

El mejor experiencia: con mi amiga Zeynip en Eşkişehir, Turquia. Ella me invitó a pasar el fin de Ramadán con su familia, y inmediatamente les me dio un calurosa acogida en turco. Entendí la mayoría de las palabras pero me encantaba la comida. Es decir, me sentía como parte del familia inmediatamente.

Ese otoño, Amy y yo reunimos con Zeynep en Estambul, siete años después de conocerle. Fue excelente reunirnos con una amiga después de tanto tiempo. Con couchsurfing se puede hacer vínculos que importan para mucho tiempo.

Musica, film e libri

Oy! What a question. I read constantly, so this is a very difficult question. My favorite books are Roberto Bolaño's "The Savage Detectives," Bruce Chatwin's "In Patagonia" and C.D. Payne's "Youth in Revolt."

"The Great Gatsby" and "Catcher in the Rye" are also up there. I've become a fan of Laurence Durrell's "The Alexandria Quartet," and have started reading the "İnce Memed" tetralogy by Yaşal Kemal. (In English, unfortunately. My Turkish isn't that good yet.)

Of course, I read lots of history too.

Una cosa incredibile che ho fatto

Climbed the Jupiter Traverse in Glacier National Park in British Columbia during the summer of 2006--we could see three mountain ranges and hundreds of individuals peaks. Stunningly beautiful.

One of my most valuable skills is baking pie. I've prepared delicious, traditional American pies on three continents now, and I'm happy to share this skill. (Trust me, if you've never had a real, American-style fruit pie, well, there's nothing like it.)

I also know lots about history and politics, ranging from Shanghai to Argentina to Turkey to the US. My mind is kind of a repository for lots of strange facts.

I'm pretty outdoorsy, and am a good skier, mountaineer, hiker, etc.

Una de mis habilidades más importantes es hacer pie (un tipo de torta) americano con fruta fresca. La verdad es que no se puede traducir "pie" a español porque tiene un significo cultural en los EEUU, y he preparado pie un tres continentes para amigos. Me encanta enseñar como hacer el pie. (Y debes creer que es el postre más excelente del mundo.)

También, sé mucho sobre la historia y política mundial. De un modo, mi mente es un deposito de datos extraños.

Me encanta el aire libre y sé mucho sobre esquiar, alpinismo, y trekking.
