ABOUT ME

I am a person with an inquisitive nature who has a desire to learn as much as possible about human cultures and relations. Coming from a mixed cultural background I understand how important and enriching it is to learn about different cultures. One thing that has left a lasting impression on me through my travels is the inequality and poverty that I witnessed along the way. It is such an impression that I want to describe in my travel diary and share with the rest of the world. I believe that one of the ways for reducing poverty and inequality in the world is by writing about people who experience these phenomenons in their daily lives. It is a noble mission that I feel I need to contribute towards.

PHILOSOPHY

If there is one philosophy that I deeply believe in then its summed up by the following quote by the Ancient Greek Philosopher Epictetus:

"Don't hope that events will turn out the way you want, welcome events in whichever way they happen: this is the path to peace"

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I started couch surfing after being introduced to the idea by one of my work colleagues. Since then I have hosted people at my place in Oxford and have also meet other couch surfers across Europe. My experience with CS has thus far been amazing and I have learnt a lot from it.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

So far I have meet lots of very interesting, warm and generous people through couch surfing. All my trips have been to countries in Europe, especially Italy and Germany, and they have been just amazing. I have really learnt a lot about the culture, behavioral traits and history of all the places I have visited through couch surfers that are part of the local community.

Interests

I have varied interests ranging from sports like swimming, cricket and tennis to adventure tourism like hiking and trekking. Most of all I like reading where my interests vary from History, Biographies to Classical Novels. Lately, however, I have had a growing interest in cultural photography where I am interested in taking pictures of remote places that are slightly off the beaten track. I have also started a blog (http://photoremotecornerworld.blogspot.co.uk/) of my pictures which I update frequently.

Music, Movies, and Books

The books that I have enjoyed reading the most so far are: The Idiot and Crime & Punishment (Dostoevsky). Resurrection, Anna Karenna and Confessions (Tolstoy). Fathers & Sons (Turgenev). Essays On Liberty & On Utilitarianism (Mill). The Leopard (Lampadusa)
My music interests vary from the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen to Classical composers such as Strauss, Beethoven, Mozart, Elgar, Tchaikovsky and Rossini.
The movies that I have enjoyed the most are: A Conversation Piece, A street car named desire, On the waterfront and The wild one.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Taking a flight through the Karakoram mountain range ad seeing 7 of the 14 highest mountains in the world - all above 8000 meters.

Crossing the Taklamakan Desert in the Xinjiang province of China and stopping at a restaurant to have water melons in the middle of the Desert.
