Overview
About Me
***Rob has just started a new job so we're going to be pretty busy until mid 2020 now. We may be able to host, but probably unlikely until he is settled in the role. Drop us a message and we can let you know - but if it's less than a fortnight in advance, we probably won't be able to.***
We now have two gorgeous cats, Socks and Alfie. Socks is inquisitive and will come and meet you. Alfie is terrified of everything but might come and say hello once he gets used to you being around. See profile pics!
CURRENT MISSION
To travel as much as we can afford, to Couchsurf as much as people let us, and to host other Couchsurfers as much as we have space and availability!
ABOUT US
We are a couple who've been together for 14 years, who picked up the CS bug whilst abroad, and had some amazing times doing so.
PHILOSOPHY
We've been lucky enough to do both a round the world trip to SE Asia, Australasia and North America, and then follow up four years later with seven months in South Americe. Our aim is to make the most of life whilst we can. So many older people have regrets about not doing this or that when they were younger, and we didn't want to look back and wish we'd missed out. Live for today, experience as much as possible, and see where life takes you.
We are open to people of any age, race, gender, sexuality and philosophy.
We are very open-minded, LGBT-friendly and 420-friendly.
We have been to Latitude, Shambala, Love Saves The Day, and are likely to hit more festivals soon. We like to party!
We ask only that you treat us, our house and our belongings with care and respect.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
**PLEASE READ!!!!**
We are here to interact with people from all walks of life, and all countries, to share experiences and - where we are able - show them our wonderful city. We are not here to act as a hotel for people who want to stay for free for one night while they are visiting other friends.
We were lucky enough to surf with some great people from 2011 - 2012 and again on a South America trip between 2015 - 2016.
We have hosted people from Italy, France, Czech Republic, Australia and Germany so far. Every experience has been fantastic.
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
We have been lucky enough to Couchsurf with wonderful people all over the world and are now able to return the favour! Meeting local people is the best way of learning about a city, country and culture.
Interests
Travel, books, gaming, TV and film, and the baking and eating of delicious cakes.
Rob writes articles, reviews and does a podcast for his videogame website (www.jumpdashroll.com), and has also been learning improvised comedy for the last few years. Gilly sings in an a capella choir. We have varied interests. Eat, sleep, rave, repeat, emphasis on the sleeping.

Music, Movies, and Books
Rob is a huge sci-fi and fantasy fan, both in print and on screen. Ray Bradbury, Joe Abercrombie, Ken Macleod, Iain M. Banks, and so on. Recently he's also been interested in more modern fiction such as Life of Pi, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and also non-fiction literature, such as Risk and Future Babble by Dan Gardner, anything by Dan Ariely, and pretty much anything that looks at social behaviour.
Gilly flits between Booker Prize-winning stuff and chick-lit but above all loves to read anything beautiful or thought-provoking.
We both love US television and Rob has a wealth of interesting but useless pop culture information on the same. Film-wise, we watch pretty much anything (although Gilly draws the line at some horror films).
Rob's taste in music covers the gamut from Iron Maiden to Enya. His favourite artist is Ben Folds, followed closely by Gabe Dixon and then a whole host of artists past and present including ELO, Billy Joel, Def Leppard, and more.
Gilly is also a Ben Folds fan (we've seen him in concert three times) and also likes the usual pop princess stuff: Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Rihanna, Adele etc and as well as assorted power ballads.
We both love classical music.
Neither of us have pretensions about what we read, listen to, or watch. If it's good, we'll like it. If it's bad, we won't.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
- Slept in a treehouse in the middle of the Laotian jungle and ziplined over trees during the day.
- Dived with Thresher Sharks and turtles in Sipadan.
- Took a countryside tour on the back of a motorbike in Vietnam for 2 days.
- Swam with wild pink dolphins in the Amazon Basin.
- Bungee-jumped, puented, skydived and sandboarded around the world
- Visited the amazing salt flats in Bolivia,
- Gazed at the stars in a sky free from light pollution in San Pedro de Atacama
- Took a roadtrip along the Quebrada de Las Conchas in Argentina and fell in love with Torrontes wine in Cafayate
- Spent 13 days on boats visiting islands in the Galapagos and snorkelling with sealions and sharks.
So many more highlights, too many to list here.
Teach, Learn, Share
Gilly would like to learn new things to cook and to see different ways of living around the globe. She is an excellent baker, and conjures up many treats although is always keen to learn more recipes.
Rob is a huge computer geek with a background in technical support. If there's an issue with your computer or gadget, chances are that he will be able to either fix it, or pinpoint the problem. He wants to one day write a book, learn a musical instrument, learn a new language, and paint a picture. Anything that he can learn from people to help him achieve these goals will be enthusiastically received. He is currently learning both Spanish and guitar.
What I Can Share with Hosts
We can offer a private room, good conversation, good company (if we're not busy!), and the use of our house as if it was your own. We can also direct you to great places to eat and things to do in Bristol and around the area.
Rob is also a writer, having been writing for many years in various forms. ***If you're interested in learning English, he is happy to offer lessons at very reasonable rates :)***
