About Me

I am studying to be an English teacher. This summer I am taking a TEFL course in Prague and after that I'll be teaching in South Korea!

I love writing and reading. I love philosophy and films. I love food and beer!

I love writing!
I am a writer and run Late Night Pomes in Portland, Oregon. We write and perform poems every weekend at 11pm across the street from Powell's City of Books. Check it out! www.latenightpomes.com
Pomes is the easiest game in the world and I'd love to teach anyone how to play. It's as easy and fun as Cards Against Humanity, but it's free and you magically end up with three or four poems you never even realized you were writing.

I've published four chapbooks and make little "matchbooks" that I leave around everywhere. They're free teeny-tiny books. If you're ever in Portland, just go to Powell's and pick one up for free! (but here's a picture: www.roberteversmann.com")

I love philosophy!
I am co-founder of the Portland Philosophy Museum (www.portlandphilosophymuseum.com) and I love to talk philosophy. I love getting abstract as much as I love breaking it down, making it tangible, kicking a rock to prove, 'I exist!'

I've learned a lot running the Portland Philosophy Museum. We break lofty 'out-there' ideas down so kids can understand them. In fact, we make them so fun that nobody can resist philosophy! We've turned the Myth of Sisyphus into an interactive and eternally frustrating (but fun!) game, Plato's Cave into a maze of light! And learning! Anyway, anyway, anyway, I love talking about ideas and I love making them accessible.

I love food and beer!
I came of age for beer when our fair city Portland came into its own for beer. We've got a brewery on every block! And with some of the best food carts in the world, we've got many many many delicious foods to sample. But I want to get out and sample more food and beer! I love to travel and I am excited to see more of Europe and eat and drink all sorts of new flavors!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I want to travel! I want to meet new people! I love talking with people and talking about fun ideas together. I want to see more of the world. I have spent most of my life in Portland so I am very ready to see other countries and meet new people.

Music, Movies, and Books

I work at Powell's City of Books in Portland and I read a lot! I work in the kids section so I've read many many picture books. But I mostly read novels, short stories and poetry. I love Thomas Bernhard, Ha Jin, Haruki Murakami, George Saunders, Ursula K. LeGuin, James Baldwin, Arthur C. Clarke, Franz Kafka, Dostoevsky and Tolstoi, David Foster Wallace. I'm reading a lot of scifi right now. I love Dune! Game of Thrones! Left Hand of Darkness! 2001!

I love movies. I love Wong Kar-Wai, Ingmar Bergman, Akira Kurosawa, Andrei Tarkovsky, John Woo, David Lynch, Werner Herzog, Hayao Miyazaki. And good God! Jordan Peele! Get Out is one of the best movies I've ever seen and it's his first feature length! I love a lot of out there movies too. Speed Racer is excellent. Akira is an all time favorite.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've flown planes!

Teach, Learn, Share

I am studying to be an English teacher so if you are learning English and would like tutoring or help with conversation, I'd be happy to help!

And pomes! It's the easiest game in the world! I would be happy to teach you how to play it. We've been playing it at Powell's for two years now and have never gotten tired of it. Pomes makes creativity easy and natural again. It's as fun as Cards Against Humanity but more creative and more memorable and free. If you're into board games or card games or writing or laughing, it's definitely worth trying out.

I am currently teaching a creative writing certificate program in Portland and I've been leading poetry and fiction workshops for two years, so if you're a writer, or if you've always had an idea for the next great novel, I'm happy to look over your writing or workshop an idea with you.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Help with English and pomes! Fun philosophical conversation!
