About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Live it! Love it! Learn it!

ABOUT ME

I'm just an easy-going, inquisitive guy who wants to experience this world and meet the interesting people in it! Although I have a technical background, my mind tends to wander into more interesting places such as photography, philosophy, business ideas, adventures, and inventions...

If you want to know more about me, check out my photo links... and since I'm tired of uploading photos to every site under the sun, check out my "best of" at http://www.flickr.com/photos/snapdragon9mm or my travels and blog at http://robfromcanada.blogspot.com . You can learn a lot by looking at my adventures as well as my photography portfolio. I think it gives an impression of how I live life, and how my brain works!

PHILOSOPHY

I believe that people should approach their personal limits from time to time just to see if they are still alive! Attempt to break from what your parents and society have told you is normal and acceptable, and go form your own opinions!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I found out about CS the day before I left on a 3 month trip to Europe... which incidentally turned into a 6 month trip to Europe, mostly due to my brilliant experiences with couchsurfing and my lack of definite itinerary!

Interests

My interests are broad... mountain biking, hiking, volleyball, squash, tennis, kiting, chilling, skiing, snowboarding, exploring, camping, wandering, trying to play my djembe, listening to music (except country), photography, and scheming wild and crazy ideas!

Music, Movies, and Books

MUSIC...
Beastie Boys, Salmonella Dub, Fat Freddy's Drop, Bob Marley, Daft Punk, Cranberries, The Doors, Finley Quaye, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Sublime, Luscious Jackson, Nightmares on Wax, Nirvana, NIN, Rage Against the Machine, Thievery Corporation, triphop, ambient, lounge, breaks, punk... to name a few.

BOOKS:
-Fury (Salman Rushdie - brilliant vocabulary, imagination gone wild)
-11 Minutes (Paulo Coehlo - basically an interesting book on life as seen from a different perspective)
-SexDrugsEinsteinAndElves (Clifford Pickover - egotistical drivel, but some interesting points on the interrelations of psychology, language, science, drugs)
-Way of The Superior Man (David Deida)
-The Secret Life Of Plants (Peter Tompkins - wow... why hasn't science embraced and explored these ideas.)
-Time & The Technospere (Jose Arguelles - Ok, the guy's a nutter for certain, but has some very interesting thoughts on society, technology, and the calendar)
-Osho - typically a brutal and honest look at life and humanity, and I find I tend to agree with him!
-Noam Chomskey (this guy just makes complete political sense to me).
-Good of the Gods (Terrence McKenna - honest, I'm not into drugs, but again, this guy has some interesting perspectives)
-If you enjoy and agree with Bernard Goldberg's 100 People Screwing Up America book, we are not bound to see the world eye-to-eye... but it would provide a provocative basis for discussion...

MOVIES: (difficult since good ones are hard to find these days)
Dead Poets Society, Requiem For A Dream... there are more, but I forget at the moment.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Quit my good engineering job and gone to see the world!

Highlights include unexpectedly seeing the EXIT festival in Serbia, being taken a personal midnight rooftop architectural tour in Belgrade, wine and food tour through Tuscany in Italy, the Biennale exhibition in Venice, 6 week yoga and meditation and Reiki course in Guatemala, burning my leg hair off (on leg) on a steam vent on Pacaya volcano in Guatemala, the bamboo forests of South Korea, chill vibe of TonSai beach in Thailand, the green and brown country roads of Cambodia, motorcycling through the Mekong, exploring Sumatra, hiking Tongoriro in NZ, ConFest in Melbourne Australia, diving in Flores Indonesia, meeting a brilliant Indonesian photographer, and staying in a 5* in Singapore... and many more!

Teach, Learn, Share

Need some help with Photoshop or photography? I'm quickly getting pretty good! I could always use a victim to practise my Shiatsu or Reiki on! How about a philosophical conversation about the concept of time?
