About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Enjoy Daegu, get accepted to grad school, and prepare for my epic US road trip.

ABOUT ME

EFL teacher currently living in Daegu, South Korea. I enjoy reading, teaching, socializing, and fitness. I adore nature and can't get enough of traveling. I lived in Sacramento my whole life until I broke out of my shell at 24 and moved to Southeast Asia. I spent two years in Thailand, and after a brief hiatus in the states, I'm back in Asia. I'm in the early stages of a career in overseas teaching; I'd enjoy eventually living and teaching in as many parts of the world as possible.

PHILOSOPHY

Live life to the fullest, and don't change your perception of what your life should be based on what others' are, or what others think it ought to be. Be happy- make your life what you want it to be. Let go of worry, fear, and self-consciousness. Live ultimately for the moment you are in (these are values I aspire to, not ones I've necessarily mastered).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I currently live in a tiny little apartment with no extra space, so I can't really host. However, I have lived in two different continents and traveled in eight different countries, and I'd love to provide my advice and expertise to eager / interested travelers on all subjects I can. Certainly if you have never been to Southeast Asia and plan to go, ask me questions!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Despite having met dozens of surfers in public places for drinks, food, advice, and fun, I've never actually surfed or hosted. However, when I travel in an area that is more expensive for accommodation, I will likely dive into surfing.

Interests

Reading, literature, travel, nature, fitness, culture, politics, movies, beer...etc. My interests morph from month to month and year to year, but my nose will always be in a book, my palate will always yearn for a cold brew, I'll always love nature, and I'll never get sick of traveling.

Music, Movies, and Books

I love all different kinds of music; lately my fav's are Phantogram, Jon Gomm, and Knife Party. I like drama films best, but most anything can keep me interested except action, which (strangely) bores me. I love to read and will soak through pretty much anything you put in front of me that is stacked, numbered, and glued on one side.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Went from Bali to Java, up a mountain, past a crater lake, back to Bali, through an epic tropical storm and into a wild din of celebrating Kuta heathens, all in one day, on a motorbike. It was New Years Eve. Possibly the best day of my life so far.

Teach, Learn, Share

When you're in Bangkok, do get out of Khao San Road for a bit, won't you? Once you do, here are some tips:

-Always take a car taxi (not a tuk-tuk) and demand the meter.
-Try to speak a little Thai; the locals will be far more appreciative of your lame attempt than you can even imagine. When confronted with a pesky salesman, say "Mai ow, kap" if you're a man and "mai ow, ka" if you're a woman, instead of "No, thank you" - they'll leave you alone a lot quicker.
-120 baht is not a cheap price for a small beer, and if you think it is, you haven't left Sukhumvit yet.
-Pick a random soi in a non-tourist neighborhood and have a drink. If there's no English menu, everyone is staring at you, an acoustic guitar is playing a song you don't know, and someone is trying to put ice in your beer, congratulations- you've found the way out of your comfort zone, and into the Real Bangkok.
-Spotting a prostitute is easy if you remember one thing: normal Thai women don't dress like sluts. Oh, and if you sense (or see) that there's even a slight chance the woman flirting with you is a ladyboy, you can stop worrying- she is!

Chok dee! / Good luck out there!
