About Me
CURRENT MISSION
To meet other warm, friendly and open people. To enjoy their company, learn about their culture & traditions and share my own.
ABOUT ME
Hello all... My names Rory. I grew up in Ireland, Dublin to be precise but I have been lucky enough to have lived/worked in a few places around the country.
I like to think I'm an outgoing guy with a warm, sociable personality. I consider myself respectful, polite and down to earth. I can be quiet at times but I definitely enjoy spending time in the company of people with good energy.
I appreciate nature and the world around me. Love being out and seeing wildlife and spending time in beautiful landscapes with good people. For example, I love being woken up by the twitter of the birds, when out camping. Not so much by the screeching of those white parrots in Australia ;-) I like being close to water whether it be the sea or a river/lake. Although I love being out in the mountains just as much. Standing on top of a mountain after climbing it is quite a feeling.
I saw some amazing storms while travelling in the southern hemisphere and love the moments after one has passed .... the smell of the rain & the feeling in the air. Almost like you can feel the energy.
I like to think I am interested in nutrition & healthy living although I haven't made a complete lifestyle change yet & I can deviate from this path often. I am interested in being self sufficient & ways we can be kinder to the environment that we all share.
I like keeping up with whats going on in the world and am a little anti-establishment.
I love to travel and have recently returned from 8 years overseas. I was working & travelling...often slowly, for 3 of those years and then decided I liked Vietnam a lot and lived there.
I like going for a surf/windsurf & the last few years diving ( my new fave hobby), getting away on road trips, watching/playing sport, going to gigs/shows/events.
Love just as much, drinkng copiuos amount of tea whilst catching up with friends, settling down to immerse myself in a good book or learning new recipes. I really like picking up new ways to cook from people I meet of different nationalities & love shared dinners.
PHILOSOPHY
Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time.
Treat others as you would like to be treated.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I've come across the couchsurfing community for the first time in Auckland. Through going on the camping trips and the weekly drinks in the city, I have met a bunch of really good people which has been awesome. I look forward to my first actual couchsurfing experiences, fingers crossed, in my upcoming travels to the Philippines and S.E Asia.

Music, Movies, and Books
I watched many good films and also sat through a few rubbish ones too. Some that spring to mind; Safety Not Guaranteed, Jeff who lived at Home, Amelie, Little Miss Sunshine, Catch me if you can, Blood Diamond, Once were Wariors, Boy.
Books-wise; last great book I read was Marching Powder, I would recommend it to everyone. Or Alone in Berlin. I do like to get lost in a book but I go through phases of not reading anything to spending all day reading.
Music; Lots & lots to suit my different moods. Love watching live music especially if there is a saxophone playing or if its Trad music. Love a bit of classic rock. I listen to groups like CCR, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Salmonella Dub, Dire Straits right through to house music & minimal techno like Booka Shade & Marek Hemmann. That kind will get my foot tapping and I'll be itching to go for a dance. Also love to listen to psytrance. Great motivational music for a bout of spring cleaning in the home.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I remember diving off the West Coast of Australia on the Ningaloo reef. Our instructor brought us to a cleaning station where the little fish live in the coral. A shark will position itself above the coral and the fish will eat/clean the parasites off the shark. This was awesome to see. My second time seeing sharks up close, my first being when I dived in Nusa Lembongan in Indonesia. At one point I hung back from the group, and while floating weightless in the water, just above the seabed, just took in the sight. I had 5 black tip reef sharks within a 20m radius of me. Incredible to see. Such beautiful creatures. I hope I will always remember it.
