About Me

I love travelling!
Ever since I went backpacking around Thailand 3 years ago, I knew I'd never be satisfied at home, so I did something about it. Since then I have spent 2 summers working in the USA and now I'm in China teaching English at a university. Next year I hope to move to Thailand to teach.
When I'm at home, I work in a local bar and do some electrical work for my Dad. Once I finish my travels, I plan to move back to the UK and become a qualified Physics teacher (need to use that university degree somehow!)

Interests

Rock climbing is one of my favourite hobbies, because since I own my own equipment, I can do it practically everywhere I travel. It even got me a job as Climbing Director at a summer camp in the USA.
I got involved in airsoft during university, and quickly purchased my own gear. I don't get many opportunities to do airsoft during my travels, especially without my gear, so I've channelled my longing for the sport into a 3D design project with the intention of returning home with a completed weapon design, ready for 3D printing and testing.
SCUBA diving is a recent hobby of mine. I decided to get my PADI Open Water licence when I was in Thailand this year, and I loved it so much, I stayed to do the Advanced Open Water course too. Currently, I don't have any plans to buy my own gear, but it opens a whole new world to me when I move to Thailand next year!
One more thing you should know; I'm a total sci-fi freak!

Music, Movies, and Books

I'll play, listen to, watch, and read any decent science fiction that's out there. I've seen all the good movies and played all the good games...and then I discovered audiobooks! There is far more creativity, deeper narratives, and more imaginative worlds in literary form than even the best special effect budgets and directors can create in film.
I'm much more chilled out when it comes to music. I'll listen to a lot, from EDM, to metal, to acoustic, and even orchestral. Recently I've got into Kygo and the Tropical House genre.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Which amazing thing should I choose?
The one that keeps jumping into my head is the roadtrip across the USA. In particular, my fondest memory was renting a 2014 Dodge Challenger in California and driving it through Death Valley to Vegas and the Grand Canyon.

Teach, Learn, Share

Jiangxia is an hour ride by bus from the Optics Valley area of Wuhan, but this takes you outside the dense crowds common in every city in China, and the tourist traps. Jiangxia is REAL China.
My apartment is on the campus of The Wuhan University Of Engineering Science, with basketball courts, ping-pong tables and a soccer field, with skateboarders taking advantage of areas of smooth terrain. It also has it's own gym. Just outside my building is a park with trails and pagodas through the trees, leading to a lake.
The West Gate is a popular place for students to get delicious and cheap food, and now I know all the best places. There are hills to the East with good hiking trails, if you want an adventure.
And of course, recent consumerism in China means there is shopping galore either in the shopping streets to the West, or Da Run Fa shopping mall to the North. Since you're outside the city, the prices are pretty cheap.
A popular pastime in China is KTV, basically a private Karaoke room for you and your friends. Again the prices are pretty good being away from the city.

That's just an idea of what's around. get in touch if you'd like to know more!

What I Can Share with Hosts

I love cooking, and I've picked up some good recipes over the years, so I'd be more than happy to cook a dinner or two.
I've done a lot of travelling, so I'm always looking to swap stories and advice with other travellers. It makes for interesting conversation.
In general I bring lots of nerdy banter, with plenty of Futurama and Archer references.

I don't smoke.
I can drink socially, but I can respect an alcohol-free home.
I'm not allergic to any pets or any thing.
I'm adamant about leaving things as I found them, and picking up after myself.
