About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To trek the remote corners of any planet I can get to.

ABOUT ME

When I was a kid, my family would spend every summer driving across the country and camping. We'd be gone for 9~10 weeks driving from south Louisiana to Canada and back. It exposed me to a lot of different people and created my love of travel. I hope to continue this tradition of meeting new people by "camping" on their sofa. For years I have focused most of my vacation time on visiting remote and wilderness areas. I met very few people doing this. Now I've decided I'm going to do the exact opposite. I'm going to start visiting large metropolitan areas and meet as many people as I can.

PHILOSOPHY

Friendliness, curiosity, respect and the ability to listen will help you make a positive connection with most of the people on this planet. On other planets, if Hollywood has it correct, this commendable attitude may not protect you from being eaten alive by some very scary creatures.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I had planned on surfing a lot. I've been surprised to find myself hosting more instead:Surfed 3x, Hosted 18xSurfed: Atlanta, Washington D.C.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

My buddy and I were in Yellowstone National Park in late October of 2009 before it closed to campers for the winter. We had a lot of good food and beer. The two 24-year-old guys in the next camp looked cold so we invited them over for breakfast. We found out they were Australians who were couch surfing America. We hiked the park together for the next few days and they told us of their travel adventures. It sounded like a great idea so I decided to get involved.

I have surfed my first couch. On my way to visit my son in South Carolina, I surfed Atlanta for two days. I really enjoyed it and have already started making plans to visit other major cities.

Music, Movies, and Books

I grew up in a small town where you had to create your own entertainment. I read a lot of books and fell in love with going to the movies. My books, music and movies are all over the map. I especially like foreign films but I have action, drama, horror, comedies, classics, etc. in my collection. Some movies I watch every year are The Seven Samurai, Henry V and Gandhi. My music collection has reggae, punk, classical, rock and opera. The artist I've seen the most is Jimmy Buffet (13 times). The best concert I've been to was Neil Young, Minneapolis 2008. Since then, Jeff Beck in Kansas City and U2 in Nashville have been very close runners-up.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Cycling the Natchez Trace during August alone when I was 16 years old. My first big adventure where I learned if you have a high tolerance for discomfort, it usually doesn't kill you and you get to do a lot of really amazing stuff.

Countries I’ve Visited

Bahamas, Botswana, Cambodia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Laos, Portugal, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, Turks and Caicos Islands, United Kingdom, United States, Virgin Islands, U.S., Zambia, Zimbabwe
