About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To provide lifesaving measures for refugees and displaced people in South Sudan.

ABOUT ME

Since graduating from University in 2008, I've been traveling and volunteering throughout various countries outside of the US. In that effort, I spent two years working with the United States Peace Corps in Morocco. For the past year I've been in Yida Refugee Camp in South Sudan as a humanitarian aid worker.

PHILOSOPHY

Never make a loan that you're not willing to also make a gift.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Unfortunately, I'm unable to host in Yida because my organization does not allow visitors on our compound. I hope to be able to host again in the future, though.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I had the opportunity to host several guests/surfers while I was living in Morocco. All of them were great guests. Interestingly, most of my guests have been on couchsurfing.com, but have not contacted me through the website. In the past, I've usually just struck up a conversation with lost-looking backpackers and those encounters have turned into hosting experiences. I've been lucky to have met so many cool new people this way.

Interests

Right now my primary interest is trying to pick up passable Nuban Arabic. Also, when I'm not making a fool of myself trying to stumble through a conversation in Arabic , I've been known to read a book or two, enjoy movies, and, from time to time, try my hand in the kitchen.

Music, Movies, and Books

So, having been away from my family in the US for the past year or so, I've found myself missing them more than I thought I would. Which is why it was a terrible decision to take one of my friend's recommendations and start reading "A Death in the Family." This is a beautiful book, but I don't recommend starting it unless you can kiss your parents goodnight after you finish it.

So far as music is concerned, I'm a big fan of whatever suits the mood (I realize this is a copout, but it happens to be true). As I write this I'm listening to Coltrane's "Giant Steps."

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The Fringe Festival in Edinburgh was amazing.

Teach, Learn, Share

I would love to learn any special recipes or culinary tricks that you might have at your disposal. So far as teaching is concerned, I'm not really an expert in any particular field. I could teach you how to drive a stick shift or how to throw a spiral on an American football...

Countries I’ve Visited
