Обо мне

Hi all! After wandering and soul searching for a year through Spain, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador, I have found the next stage of my journey - to be in grad school for counselling psychology. Even though I am now more “settled”, I still miss the magic of travel, and would like to travel by hosting people from different countries. Also, while travelling, I’ve had many kind couchsurfers and strangers help me, and now I would like to give back.

I am from Singapore originally, but have moved around so much I don’t know where home is anymore. Maybe my belonging is in my wandering.

Anyway, since I am in grad school, that is my priority, but in my free time I could spend some time with you. I have a car and could take you somewhere even if I can’t come along. I live 15 min walk away from the bus stop that goes to downtown. I have 1 extra bedroom and a couch.

Что привело меня на Couchsurfing

I’m here to connect with local people from the countries I visit! People are one of the most, if not the most important part of travelling, and it adds so much richness when you spend time with and see the place through the locals’ eyes.

My recent musings in life:

- Singapore is a small and dense country, so I have recently been interested in exploring life on a farm. Living off the land is a deeply human thing, people have done it for thousands of years. But the relationship between humanity and the land has been broken - what have we lost from our disconnection to the land? What can we gain from it?

- So many people around the world travel, and they do it differently. So what does it mean to travel well? What does it mean to have “been” to a place? Seeing the main sights, or meeting local people? How can I travel with less of a consumer mindset?

- Learning Spanish has revealed some profound life lessons to me. There’s such a vulnerability and humility when you give up your right to understand and to be understood. In that way, it’s as if you become like a child again, barely able to communicate. But what wisdom there is in that, because at the end of the day, we know so much less about this world and everything in it than we think we do. And what a great reminder language learning is for that, as it humbles us continuously, as we say “I don’t know, I don’t know, can you speak slower? I still don’t understand.”

Learning Spanish is difficult, frustrating and fun. It sure has given me more empathy for those learning a new language, and has also helped me appreciate the English and Chinese language more. I love things that help me make the familiar strange. Life is more colourful that way.
