About Me

Greetings couch-based lifeforms!

I'm Samuel, a classically trained animator and professional perfectionist from the east coast of Australia.

In 2017 I flipped the table on a pretty idealistic existence in Melbourne to run away and live in Europe because having Italian citizenship without language or culture felt strange. 8 months in Florence didn't do a whole lot to improve my language skills, but I had an amazing time there before relocating to London to live the clichéd, warehouse dwelling life of a freelance artist in Hackney Wick.

My current adventure is taking me to America for the first time and I'll be exploring LA, Portland and hopefully NYC because I like cold weather and my jacket collection is extensive (and fabulous).

Can't wait to meet more of you lot real soon for max chill times and coffee fuelled adventures!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Couch surfing for me continues to be one amazingly weird and delightful adventure. One time I ended up in an abandoned office building right in the centre of London with a collection of fellow surfers, hippies and vagabonds.

All the lovely people I've met through this network of sharing and kindness is what makes it so special.

Interests

I'm a perpetually creative creature and I can lose entire days drawing, sculpting, crafting and making. I've been really getting into casting and mould making recently so if that's your jam I'd love to learn more!

Music, Movies, and Books

Queens of the Stone Age, Beck and Radiohead are my favourite bands from back in the day. More recently I've been listening to Kelly Lee Owens (UK), Shrimpwitch (AUS) and The Dig (USA). I can't sing to save myself, but I did teach myself the ukulele basics while living in Florence because my cello wouldn't fit in my carry-on luggage.

I really enjoy attending film festivals to binge all the animation screenings and recently went to Berlin and Bristol to represent a short film I worked on. As an animator I get to watch all the cartoons I want and call it research and it also justifies the fact I have a Jake the Dog Adventure Time backpack.

I'm currently reading ''Why I'm No Longer Talking To White People About Race' and 'I Love Dick'. The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is one of my favourite books because by the time I've finished the series I've forgotten where it even started.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach surrealist drawing games, animation principles and how to be very average at playing ukulele.

I want to keep learning Italian so I can watch the dubbed version of The Simpsons without my head exploding.

I want to share a pizza and eat all the left over crusts because that's how I maintain my curly hair.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Creativity, smiles, beers and/or whisky depending on the weather, cycling/running adventures, silliness, microwave dinners, bad jokes and obscure animations.

Countries I’ve Visited

Albania, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, United States

Countries I’ve Lived In

Australia, Italy, New Zealand, United Kingdom
