Chi sono

CURRENT MISSION

adventure, explore, learn, question

ABOUT ME

Really, I want to get myself into the countryside- on a mountainside or by the sea, so my plans are to make plans that mean I'll be living off the land more - but then exciting opportunities distract me again..

I'm interested in alternative living and want to learn more alternative therapy, also my life is informed by activism, and anarchism, and questions of social justice.

At the moment I'm living in Catania, Sicily, having just started as an EVS volunteer working with Arci, a leftist org that works with migrants. I'm new to the city - and to Italy and Italian - so I'm keen to meet people who can help me get to know where I am a bit better.

PHILOSOPHY

I find it difficult to articulate- in some ways, best articulated through my interests and things that amaze me. I like life in its simplicity. I want to learn about myself and others, to feel at ease with myself. I get a lot of comfort and happiness from the natural world - its the nearest thing to any God I feel - not that I seek a God. My life is certainly guided by ethical considerations, which is why I try to be vegan, to not fly, follow activism, it goes on. But I don't want to preach, really don't appreciate dogmatic behaviour, I think we shouldn't be divided in proving the contradictions in others, but try to create safe environments in which people feel free to progress themselves.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I host when I can, and I surf when I can. It's a great way to meet interesting people and build networks.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Unofficially hosted a few couchsurfers when I lived in Newcastle.. and at the moment on a couch in Greece, having a fantastic experience!

Interessi

Growing vegetables! I miss so much not having a vegetable garden since I left my place in Newcastle. Growing really gives you an appreciation for nature, to appreciate food, natural growth day by day, the food tastes so much sweeter and means so much more - you have invested yourself in its life! Ahh..
.. and this links up with my passion for the countryside and travelling, with WOOFing, which is a voluntary scheme where you get accommodated on organic farms in exchange for a spot of free labour. It's taken me to some of the most beautiful regions of Spain. An amazing way to travel and not spend much, and meet interesting experimental hippy-types.

Cycling. I am lazy to do it as much as I would really like - actually I am scared in London. But I would love to make proper travels with a bike and panniers and a good friend/lover. You really feel the landscape you travel through, feel the progress and the changes around you. For the same reason, long walks/hikes over days are really amazing too, although it's harder carrying all your stuff..

Cooking, experimenting, improving my diet, trying to be vegan and discover superfoods and supertastes. I don't believe in flashy food, but good food, and try to get organic produce as much as I can afford/find it. I'm spooked by the foods industry- it's completely fucked up.

I've been studying undocumented migration in the EU in the past years and this is an issue I feel strong about. Am also into discovering amazing food from all over the world, cycling, walking, photographing, documentary-watching, live music listening, and dancing.

Musica, film e libri

Really into quality documentary or film covering social justice issues. Drowned Out, Darwin's Nightmare, The Globalisation Tapes spring to mind.. I don't have much time to watch film, and tend to want to educate myself with what I watch. Not good at just watching pure entertainment - I'm not entertained, I get restless.

Music, I love all kinds, especially live. Drum & bass to reggae and dub, world music (love malian music) to math rock and experimental stuff. Long time favourites are Radiohead, Massive Attack, Bjork, oh, I can't do lists.

I like to escape in fiction, but also like to inform myself through non-fiction. Currently reading Susan Orbach's Bodies- is canny interesting.

Una cosa incredibile che ho fatto

There are big, amazing things, amazing experiences I had on travels. But then there are the simple, and in their simplicity almost more amazing, things; the spring is coming and the trees outside are growing each day, changing each day. The moon, waxes and wanes and gives me hope- and I know friends all over can look up and watch her and have a moment of reflection. The sun, the wind, the rain, the stars, they never fail to amaze me and wake me up and feel alive.

I can teach you, all I know.. If you are interested in migration I'm you're girl- but I will get political. Vegi cooking, basic Portuguese. What I want to learn: about permaculture, how to knit more than a scarf, craft work, Italian/Arabic/more Portuguese. Much, actually :)
