Chontacuros (which in Quechua means “chonta worms”) are part of the diet of the Amazonian indigenous people, but in recent months this has spread to the cities to share with tourists and residents.

The chontacuro becomes a thick worm after it is deposited in the heart of the chonta tree by a black beetle that carries eggs on its wings that will later become larvae.

The indigenous people consume this worm, considered a food with a high protein content due to its natural fat.

Its name varies according to the language of the nationality, thus, in Shuar it is known as mundish; while in Achuar it is known as muquindi.

The chonta tree in which this worm grows takes between one and two years to develop until it reaches a height of 6 to 9 meters with its characteristic sharp thorns all over its bark, which is why it is difficult to harvest the fruits manually, which is why most trees are knocked down to the ground. This is where these larvae develop.

Luego de que los indígenas han cultivado la fruta del árbol de chonta, este es cortado y se le saca el palmito, que es empleado en la preparación de algunos platos típicos en la Amazonía.

Los restos de este árbol que se dejan en el suelo sirven para que el escarabajo negro deposite sus larvas. Transcurridos dos meses, los indígenas regresan a recoger los gusanos chontacuros. De cada pedazo de chonta se pueden recoger entre 40 y 50 ejemplares.

Por su alto contenido de grasa, los habitantes de las comunidades le atribuyen propiedades curativas, algunas madres los emplean para sanar infecciones de la lengua y garganta en los niños, además alivia la tos y el asma, según Rebeca Sharup, indígena achuar.

Los nativos suelen consumirlos de forma natural, sin desechar ninguna parte de este gusano, que alcanza 7 centímetros de largo por 5 de diámetro.

La Ayahuasca es una infusión de dos o más plantas amazónicas que da como resultado una bebida intoxicante y mágica. Este brebaje ha sido utilizado desde hace miles de años por algunas de las culturas amazónicas en ceremonias y rituales sagrados.
