About Me

I believe that each moment in life is precious. We are each allotted a fixed number of these moments, and we have the opportunity to enjoy or squander them at our discretion. I would prefer to tip the scales in the direction of enjoyment. To use these moments to make the world a better place once my last one is spent than it was before I was first given my share.

I'm currently studying to become a geoscientist with an emphasis in hydrology. My long term goals include doing consulting work for state and environmental agencies to assess safe groundwater access, remediation, and risk assessment for new planning. I don't particularly relish the idea of a 9-5 for the next several decades, and so plan to begin working for a few months at a time and alternately traveling for a few months at a time. It should be a blast.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

In my younger days, I suffered from small-town-itis. My traveling radius was small, and although I always enjoyed reading and learning about new destinations, I always found money and time to be an impediment. Couchsurfing offers an opportunity to meet new and excellent people while at the same time broadening my horizons via travel.

Interests

I am interested in earth, the things on it, the things in it, and the things around it. For the non-earthcentric, I would say the universe is my passion. I love the natural sciences. I love being in nature. I love to hop on a bicycle and get lost for a day. I love reading and music and laughing.

Mostly, I love to learn. However, learning is not just about burying your head in a book or frying your retinas with Wikipedia's enlightening glow. It is also about getting out in the world and seeing things for yourself. It is about meeting new people and absorbing their stories. When done correctly, living itself is an act of unceasing enlightenment.

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm a Vonnegut man. I'm not much for movies, but so it goes.

Music is a tough one. I run the gamut here. I love pop when it's got heart. I love the blues when it's not like being at a funeral. I love rock when it's not too phallic. I love the oldies when they haven't gotten the "dead horse" treatment. I love classical when it dances rather than plods. I love Motown all the time because it's Motown, dammit.
