About Me

Hi, my name is Sam and I'm a 27 year old kiwi heading to Canada on a 2 year working holiday visa.

I like to think that I'm a friendly, considerate person who is always keen to try something new and meet new people.

Since leaving home for university at the age of 18 I've lived in shared housing and flat situations so I understand the dynamics of shared living and will happily contribute any way I can.

While I'm new to this website I've hosted many people in the various different flats I've lived in and intend to reciprocate once I'm established somewhere in Canada.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm on couchsurfing as it is a great way to meet new people in a foreign country and experience the place with a local connection.

Interests

Coming from New Zealand I really enjoy being outside. If possible I try and cycle rather than driving, and am keen to get into mountain biking also. I love the snow and can't wait to experience some new terrain and snow.

I love listening and discovering new music, and attending live events. Over the past couple of years I have been involved in organising a small not-for-profit music and arts festival here in NZ with the emphasis on DIT or 'Doing it Together'.

I'm always up to try something new as you never know what your next interest might be.

  • cycling
  • fishing
  • hiking
  • snowboarding

  • frisbee
  • music events

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm more inclined to listen hip hop and rap, both a mix of old and new such as Snoop, Biggie, Dre, Schoolboy Q, Action Bronson, Nas, Kendrick Lamar etc.

I also enjoy what I guess is considered 'alternative music' such as James Blake, Flying Lotus, Jamie XX, J Dilla, Bob Moses, BICEP, Tame Impala, Nicolas Jaar...

In saying that, I will give anything a go and am always open to someone opening my eyes to something new. You obviously can't go past a bit of classic Phil Collins either.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

After spontaneously quitting my job as a lawyer I just spent the last 9 months living and working in Milford Sound in the South Island. This is one of the most remote parts of the country (a community made up of workers only, 250 in summer, 60 in winter), with no pub, shops or cellphone coverage.

This was great not only for the natural beauty (google it if you haven't been) but also the opportunity to meet new people every day through my boat crew position.

Teach, Learn, Share

I enjoy tinkering with everyday things so maybe you have a bike that's slipping gears or a loose door handle that needs some love. I have some cool photos from the last 9 months living in the wilderness that I would like to share. While I'm no Gordon Ramsey I'm fairly competent in the kitchen and could teach you how to make some classic Kiwi treats such as Afghans or Coconut Ice.

Always keen to learn something new and I've been told I'm a good listener so even if you just want to have a vent at the end of a long day I'm your guy!

What I Can Share with Hosts

A laugh, beer or meal. Maybe even all of the above. A heap of music from this side of the world you may not have heard before. I like dogs too, so I would happily walk your dog is you have one.

I can answer any questions you have about my country, and even get you a discounted trip at Milford Sound if you ever head over.
