About Me

I work most of the year on old sailing ships, and I travel in the off-season. I love good stories, fancy drinks, ancient history, and street performers, especially violinists and fire dancers. I know a lot about pirate history, Shakespeare, and Florentine street art. I love adventure books, I draw comics, and I take a lot of photos of street art. I travel light, laugh easily, and really like trying new food. And in fifth grade I learned how to throw a javelin, so that's cool maybe.

It's the low season in New England for sailing right now, and so I came to Rome to study Italian. Now I'm traveling a little bit in the last two weeks before the season begins.

Philosophy - Choose joy.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

To see the world and meet great people! It's more fun to know a city through the people who live there.

A few things to know:
Mutual respect is extremely important to me
I am a very independent guest; although I really enjoy spending time with my hosts, I don't need a babysitter
I am very flexible, and I am difficult to upset
I always clean up after myself, and I'm happy to help around the house as much as I can; I don't ever want my presence to be a headache!

Interests

I've only worked on schooners so far, but my dream is to work on a square-rigger, and eventually to cross the Atlantic on a tall ship! And maybe in the future to become a captain myself.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

This last November I sailed almost 2000 miles from Maine to Antigua on a 50ft schooner with three other crew members. It was my first deepwater passage, and there were one or two squalls in which I was certain we were all going to die, but it was hands-down the most amazing thing I've ever done.

Teach, Learn, Share

I know a decent amount about Florence and Rome if you're visiting for a few days and want some pointers; I worked in a Florentine hostel last winter and I've spent a lot of time in Rome.
I make amazing chocolate chip cookies, chicken enchiladas, and green curry!
I know a bunch of sea shanties, I have some good stories, I know a lot of Cool Pirate Facts, and I can probably write you a sonnet if you give me half an hour. It won't be a very good sonnet, but goddamn will the iambic pentameter be flawless.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Paintings, sea shanties, and some stories - like the time my schooner was followed by pirates in the Caribbean.
