ABOUT ME

I'm pretty open to trying new experiences. I spent the first half of my life in San Diego, and moved with my family to the Portland, Oregon area in 1997. My education was taken in South Dakota, with theatre gigs forcing relocation for summer jobs in Kansas, though I eventually found myself back in the Portland area.
I enjoy literature immensely, and have worked for a bookseller off and on for the last 8 years. I also work during the summers as a historian for a speed boat in Portland, and as an festival producer for the same company, which operates a series of dinner yachts.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I'm rather new to the idea of sharing a couch with a stranger, or borrowing one as well, but it seems like an awesome way to really understand a different culture and a great way to meet people around the world.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I'm a couch-virgin. I tried sleeping on a love-seat once, but had a sore neck in the morning. Oh, and I slept on a futon in college to save room.

I love motor-touring, reading, boating, running, and all the arts. Performing is just about my favorite thing in the world. I've been performing in both musical and non-musical theatre for the past 10 years, but enjoy doing operas as well. I'm also an instrumentalist, tinkering with harpsichord, ukulele, and flute. I really enjoy nature. The Pacific Northwest is the perfect venue for hiking and canoeing, or a brisk run along the river.

Books: I really love classic literature... The Picture of Dorian Gray and all of Wilde's work, all of Patricia Highsmith's novels, the work of Michael Chabone, Margaret Attwood, David Sedaris, Chuck Palahniuk, Andre Gide, Augusten Burroughs, Isherwood, Capote, Steinbeck, Fitzgerald, Austen, Kerouac, Susskind, Huysmans...

Music: Classically I love the baroque keyboardists... Bach, Handel, Hayden, Scarlotti.
Performance of these I prefer by Glenn Gould.

I love 1920's-40's pop music, especially Gypsy Jazz. Some favorites include Joe Venuti, Lizzie Miles, Bessie Smith, Guy Lombardo, Ben Selvin, Richard Himber and Joey Nash, Cliff Edwards, Noel Coward and all of Cole Porter, the Boswell Sisters, the Andrews Sisters, Ruth Etting, Doris Day, Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Bob Hope, Duke Ellington, The Ink Spots, The Mills Brothers...

I like 50's Jazz, but really love Chet Baker.

Along more contemporary lines, I enjoy, Queen, Radiohead, Elliot Smith, The Scissor Sisters, Billy Joel, The Postal Service and Deathcab, Franz Ferdinand, Ben Folds, The Arcade Fire...

Film: I'm pretty open to anything though I'm not a fan of mindless comedies. Give me something with wit and not banality. I love the films of Anthony Minghella and the cadre of actors he worked with.

I was very fortunate to tour with the Portland Opera, performing as Shaunard in La Boheme during 2008.
