About Me

Hello! I'm Samson, a 29-year-old guy from Toronto, Canada. I first got on Couchsurfing in 2016 when I was doing an around-the-world backpacking trip from Australia to Europe via Southeast Asia, Japan, China, and India! In my "normal life" back home, I work as a mechanical engineer in the American automotive industry.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I have lived in Europe together with other friends and expats who were working for the same company. I have also spent months at a time on the road, travelling alone. In bosh, I truly learned that "the people make the place". I have been fortunate to make many lifelong friends during my travels, and even though my trips always seem to end too soon, I still hope to make many more. What better way than Couchsurfing?

Interests

Travel: In 2016 I did a year-long around-the-world backpacking trip from Australia to Asia to Europe. In the past, I have lived in Germany, backpacked through much of central and eastern Europe (12 countries total!) and have traveled a fair bit around the United States (14 states and counting!).

Sports: I love basketball, soccer, baseball, and American football, probably in that order. Big fan of Arsenal FC, and fulfilled the dream of seeing them in London in September 2016 (we won against Chelsea 3-0!).

Food: I'm not much of a foodie, but I love craft beer, and am always open to trying new things.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: I am a huge fan of both rap and alternative/indie rock.
Big fan of Kanye West, JayZ, and can listen to most mainstream stuff, but listen to mostly older albums from the Clipse, Common, Cassidy, Jadakiss, etc. I think Biggie was better than Tupac - don't hate me!
New alt/indie bands I've gotten into lately (late 2015/early 2016) are Vinyl Theatre, Saint Motel, and The Wombats. I also think Pearl Jam was/is a better band than Nirvana - again, don't hate me! :)

Books: I read a mix of classics and nonfictions, and am always happy to trade books with other travellers :) Favourite book of all time is "Catch 22" by Joseph Heller.
Currently reading "How Soccer Explains the World" by Franklin Foer. Got it from a French girl in Calcutta by trading her "For One More Day" by Mitch Albom, which I got from a Norwegian guy in Kathmandu by trading him "Superfreakonomics" by Stephen Dubner/Stephen Levitt, which I got....

Movies: Don't really watch a lot of movies, but I like anything dramatic or with a good plot twist - Inception, Shutter Island, The Prestige, etc.
For laughs, I prefer TV shows. My favourite sitcoms are The Simpsons, Arrested Development, How I Met Your Mother, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, etc.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

In Indonesia: Pulled an all-nighter having a laugh with my buddy Andy from England, then climbed Mt. Batur with him in the middle of the night to watch the sunrise over a volcano. Met some friends on the trek who would join us on our travels for the next 2 weeks around Indonesia.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach: I grew up playing basketball and baseball. If you ever wanted to know how to shoot a jumpshot, or throw a curveball, or just understand anything about most North American sports, I'm your man!

Learn: Photography tips/tricks are always welcome. Travelling and photography seem to go hand-in-hand, so I'm always looking to learn and improve my photos.

Share: I'm happy to share any and all travel experiences from the places I have visited. I'm an open book, ask me anything :) I also like to share new music that I've discovered (mostly alt/indie rock).

What I Can Share with Hosts

Travel stories/experiences from about 30 countries, new music, nonfiction book recommendations, and hopefully good conversation over a cup of coffee or two.

I am also a big fan of craft beers and many sitcoms and stand up comedy, so if you want to just hang out, drink a beer and share some laughs, I am in for that as well!
