About Me

Hello, I'm Samuel Petty, a literary and graphics artist, from New York State. Following a desire to explore the world I've had since birth, and a friend I met from Santiago, I decided to leave for Chile. I simply know that I must gain as much understanding as I can about the world for use in my art.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I intend to find most hosts through the Workaway volunteer program, as I like to show thanks for the generostiy of my hosts by helping to make their lives easier while I stay, anyway, but as there is sometimes some difficulty in coordinating schedules, it is sometimes more reasonable to stay with a couchsurfing host.

Music, Movies, and Books

My musical tastes range far and wide, from jazz, hip-hop, and rhythm and blues, through electronic, ambient, and trance, to metal, rock, math-rock, and post rock. Lately, I've been listening to Solar Fields and Carbon Based Lifeforms, but last week I was all about Massive Attack.

I don't watch a lot of movies and television, if any, but when I did, I really enjoyed 80s science fiction, and I've lost count of how many times I've seen the Star Wars trilogy and the Aliens movies. Occasionally, I like to watch Japanese Animation, like Ghost in the Shell, Ergo Proxy, and Golden Boy Kintaro.

My favorite book is definitely "Writing Down the Bones" by Natalie Goldberg. It approaches Zen lifestyle through the lens of creative writing. Besides just writing, its wisdom can be applied to business, relationships, life, and carreer--it is an invaluuable companion to have any time one is struggling with turmoil and doubt.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I don't aim to perform the occasional miracle, but always to find miracles in the mundane fascia of life.

I built an amazing notebook out of materials I bought on ebay, and I write and draw in it every day. I have begun to think it hold more 'me' than I do.

Teach, Learn, Share

I am a really good cook, and I prefer to cook and eat healthy, vegan/vegetarian, but I don't follow any strict diet, and I would really like to learn the styles and flavors of the people I stay with, though I would be glad to share my own if you like, anyway.

I am an artist and writer, and I have given workshops and tutored people on poetry, story design, creative writing, and illustration, as well as the practice of using journaling as a means to organize and understand one's own existence. In fact, it's a practice I employ every day, and I think the world should know about it. I also can teach/perform beatboxing, singing, piano, algebra, bass-playing, and swordfighting

What I Can Share with Hosts

I have gained many interesting stories through various odd-jobs and strange living situations here in the states. I have a few go-to stories to share, but most remain buried in my memory until they are jogged to the surface by some external thing that reminds me. I would be happy to share most of them, and many of them have given me wisdoms that I would be glad to share as well.
