About Me

Hola! Me llamo Sarah y soy nueva en Couchsurfing. Soy una persona abierta y me encanta probar comidas nuevas y aprender de otras culturas.

Hi there! My name is Sarah and I'm new to the couch surfing community. I am very open-minded and I love to try different foods and learn about other cultures.

I grew up in a small town in the US, and due to money constraints I did not get many opportunities to travel as a kid. During college, I got bit by the "travel bug" after studying abroad in Thailand for two months. After graduation I started working full time, and I did not travel much during my first two years out of college so I could pay off my student loans. After I paid off my loans, I started traveling whenever I could. I still consider myself new to travel and I have only been to a few countries so far, but I hope to really expand that list over the next few years and throughout the rest of my life :)

Here are a few of my favorite travel memories so far:
- I stayed in India for three weeks for a work trip. During one of the weekends I was there, I stayed with a coworkers' family in Delhi. His family took me around to all of the local sights, helped me buy a saree, and really treated me like part of their family.
- While traveling to Egypt with my sister, we stopped at a local ahwa (sort of like an Egyptian-style cafe) for some shisha and tea. The ahwa owner started talking to us and gave us tips on how to avoid the marketplace hassle, since we were two white women traveling by ourselves. He was very funny and enjoyed his company. The next day we visited the same ahwa, and the owner recognized us and introduced us to his wife and brother! The ahwa owner and his wife sat with us and we enjoyed shisha and tea together while chatting and getting to know each other. After awhile they invited us to their apartment for more tea and we ended up watching Shrek together :)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

When I first started traveling, I was very scared of the world. I only stayed at hotels and booked a lot of guided tours. But the more I travel, the more I realize that the world is not as scary as I thought it was. Many people are friendly and inviting and willing to help. I eventually "graduated" and pushed myself to try Airbnb, and I really enjoyed a lot of my experiences there. I loved being able to stay with locals and get their insight, and I realized how impersonal and overrated a hotel stay can be.

Now I am trying Couchsurfing because it seems like a great community of people who are truly dedicated to traveling and learning about other cultures. The members are not here for the money (like some Airbnb hosts can be). They are in it for the experiences. I am hoping that Couchsurfing will give me more opportunities to become friends with locals and experience traveling in a better way.

Music, Movies, and Books

I really like reading crime drama and murder mysteries. A couple of my favorites are The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl. I also started reading books on anthropology. "Anatomy of Love" and "Sapiens" are a couple that I have really enjoyed.

I recently started listening to podcasts. My current favorites are "Criminal" and "Invisibilia"

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I quit my job and left the US with a one-way ticket to Chile. I'm starting as a volunteer here but I'll see where life takes me :)

Dejé de mi trabajo y salí de los estados unidos con un boleto de ida a Chile. Soy una voluntaria acá pero a ver donde la vida me lleva :)
