About Me
Hi I'm Sarah, a kiwi chick currently backpacking around the African continent.
A country girl at heart, I grew up in the beautiful mountains and farm land of southern NZ. After uni I spent 9 years city living in Melbourne, Australia, before taking the plunge and moving to Tanzania at the start of 2015.
Moving to Tz is the best decision I've ever made. After 2.5 years working in the NGO sector and living in and out of the very rural bush I've chilled out and rediscovered my wanderlust. Learnt to live without electricity or running water, and appreciate the subtle differences in daily meals of ugali and beans 🏻
Now I'm on a backpacking trip with little planning. I'm hoping to travel light and local, and meet cool people on the way who can share an experience, join the journey or point me in a direction.
My tribe is found chatting around a fire with a glass of whatever, talking all things adventure, culture, religion, politics, travel, home, family. Love to dance, hike, drink, laugh and eat my way around the world. Food is everything.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I'm solo traveling and keen to find connections and company along my journey.
I first learnt about couch surfing through my parents, who love hosting travelers in their beautiful corner of NZ. I like to think they've put some positive couchsurfing karma out there in the world for me, and I hope to return the favour and continue to spread the goodwill as a host whenever I'm settled again.
Music, Movies, and Books
Radiohead and 90s music is my secret joy. But really I like pretty much everything from opera to folk to dance to rap. A recent Venezuelan couch surfer has me obsessed with reggaeton.
I like movies with interesting characters or quirks. My favorite is anything Wes Anderson. 500 Days of Summer. Good war films.
I'm a shamefully lazy reader. I dream of being that girl who 'hasn't seen the movie, but read the book'. I'm bringing a Kindle with me on my trip hoping to become this ideal self...
Teach, Learn, Share
I'm a pretty alright cook, had a random stint as a brunch chef. Happy to share/teach/learn anything food related.
Having lived in East Africa for a few years I guess I may be helpful to fellow travelers in navigating the randomness of African transport, protocol, politics and "meat".
