About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To participate in creating a better world . . . one way and another . . . and to enjoy the process, connect with people, and travel

ABOUT ME

The beauty of nature inspires and sustains me. Outdoor recreation and human/wind powered travel are important in my life.

For several years I spent about half my time traveling, mostly by bicycle. Lately I'm traveling more by boat (see below). Otherwise I spend my time in ways that involve family (particularly daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter), friends, and community. I love reading, music, ideas . . . so many things.

Spring 2012 I built a small sailing-rowing-cruising boat, the Marsh Duck (18 feet long, very light, with tiny cabin). During the summer I spent 6 weeks cruising the San Juan Islands and Puget Sound. 2013 winter and spring I made some modifications and spent almost 3 months in the summer cruising the Salish Sea - all over from Port Townsend to Alert Bay (almost to the N. end of Vancouver Island. You can see more about the Marsh Duck and follow our cruising at www.scotdomergueblog.wordpress.com. 2017 I bought an old San Juan 21 and cruised some of the same area for over 3 months; decided it was too much boat and am designing another small boat, somewhat like the Marsh Duck . . . but will probably focus on hiking and backpacking this summer.

PHILOSOPHY

Personal responsibility - particularly for my own reality. Being healthy and centered and balanced so that I can respond constructively and creatively to whatever comes along. Joyful acceptance - of everything, even that which I would rather was different; seeing clearly, as it is really, not what would make me more comfortable; willing to work toward creating something better, as I can.

Music, Movies, and Books

Many!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

In 1992-95 I worked with Russian colleagues developing a conflict resolution center in St. Petersburg, using and adapting American mediation techniques. I spent 11 months in Russia spread out over 13 trips. I had many wonderful and amazing experiences! What we started is now part of the St. Petersburg University's Department of Conflictology.

I also spent 3 months helping with North Andaman Tsunami Relief (now Andaman Discoveries) after the Tsunami - wonderful organization, wonderful experience.

Teach, Learn, Share

Great Idea. I'd be happy to share my knowledge and experience related to:
- Simple living
- Bicycle travel, bicycle as transportation, car-free living
- Sustainable home design and construction
- Building and cruising on very small sailing/human powered boats
I'm also interested in discussions/forums regarding sustainable development, international relations, etc.

Countries I’ve Visited
