One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Before university, I spend two months in Nepal teaching English. My friend and I were staying with a local Nepalese family about 1 hour outside of Kathmandu. There was a local festival on and we were spending the morning walking around a busy square. Out of nowhere there was a huge commotion as a group of men ran through the crowd yelling. They were chasing an escaped goat and it was coming straight for us. They could have been chasing it for hours, it was large and it was very angry. I took a deep breath, as it flew past I grabbed its short leash an inch or so from the neck and pulled hard to bring it to a stop. The goat groaned and the whole square began cheering and clapping for the tall, white, strange looking tourist who had just captured an escaped goat. I soaked up the applause, a hero, waving to the crowd. Moments later I discovered we were attending a yearly goat sacrifice festival.
