About Me

I am on a lifelong mission to learn, both about myself and others, to grow and to evolve. The best way I know to do so is to put myself in situations that challenge how I see the world.

29 year old born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. I've spent the last number of years exercising my will to travel both at home and abroad. My most favorite of times are spent emersed in the wondrous back yard that is western Canada, bouncing around from mountains to festivals to west coast beaches. I am currently living in Nelson, BC, having completed studies in the Fine Woodworking at the Selkirk College.

While it's often time difficult, I try to keep a mind open for curiosity and learning, in whatever form that may take. I am looking to discover and I hope that by meeting new and fantastic people I'll grow into a more conscientious person.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I've met a number of fantastic people through Couch surfing, both locals and other travelers, some of which I'm happy to now call close friends. While it's nice to save money while on the road, I think the true value in this project is to gain a better, deeper understanding of local communities and people along the way. Gone are the days where I take pleasure in bouncing from hostel to hostel, drinking and partying with the same crowd. I yearn for unique experiences which I will look back upon with fondness.

I have not spent much time actively couch surfing, though I have had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know countless surfers over the past few years. A number of my close friends are active hosts in my city so I am constantly meeting new travelers on their way through.

Interests

I enjoy spending most of my time out and about just doing stuff. This might mean going hiking, climbing, dancing my bones off at a music festival, skiing in the winter, or simply meandering around a new town looking for what's good. Many of my most memorable experiences tend to occur when I release my guard and allow life to unfold, taking in whatever is new and interesting. I take much joy from helping and giving to others, and that often takes the form of a delicious meal. With all that said, though, I am an advocate for quite time and often need time alone to re-energize.

Music, Movies, and Books

I listen to many different types of music, but I prefer mostly indie rock and electronic. I like supporting local music in my hometown.

I don't spend much time watching movies or TV, as I tend to spend my time out and about and getting active. That's not to say I don't like a good evening spent relaxing with a good movie or book.

I'm currently reading a The Fall of Giants, written by Ken Follet. Other recent favorites include The Orenda, The Alchemist, The Book of Negroes, Grapes of Wrath, Ken Follet's Kingsbridge Series, and, last but certainly not least, King Killer Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

A few years ago I bought a motorcycle and spent a month driving it across Vietnam. It was both as terrifying and exciting as it sounds, and despite the chaos that typifies Vietnamese roads, I didn't die even once! I still regard that as one of my favorite memories.

Most recently, I've been fortunate enough to spend time working on a stage build crew at the Shambhala Music Festival. It was something I dreamt about getting into for years, but only until I pursued it did I manage to make that dream into a reality.

Teach, Learn, Share

As I continue my travels, I'd like to explore my interest in permaculture and sustainable living. The stresses which we put on our natural system are not sustainable so I'd like to learn more about how to minimize my own impact. I'd also like to build on my woodworking skillset and hope to train in timber framing.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Food, riveting conversation, festive drinks of your favorite sort! I'm also a fairly competent woodworker so perhaps I could help beautify your abode.

Countries I’ve Visited

Cambodia, England, France, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Thailand, United States, Viet Nam
