ABOUT ME
I am in the middle of a PhD, I used to study physics and I get very excited about fractals, so I guess that makes me a bit of a geek; but I have lots of other interests too and I still know how to have fun! My big love is music, I play keyboard, collect records and like go to gigs/clubs/house parties as often as possible. I joint own a small soundsystem with some friends and we run a regular clubnight in Manchester.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
In every house I have lived in for the last 3-4 years I've had at least one housemate on couch-surfers. I've only recently gotten my own profile and tried couchsurfing myself, but I've been helping host surfers for years, showing people around Manchester and helping them feel at home.
Interests
Music (playing and listening), science, sound systems (science + music!), nature, mountains, reading, dancing, home-brewing and tea.

Music, Movies, and Books
My taste in music is pretty eclectic, I listen to music I think is good rather than particular genres, and am open to give pretty much anything a try. Leonard Cohen, Jeffrey Lewis, Venetian Snares, Joanna Newsom, Múm, Nicolas Jaar, Frank Zappa, Quantic, Toots and the Maytals and Jurrasic 5 are a few of my favourites off the top of my head (see http://www.last.fm/user/scottan for full list).I'm always interested in the local music of wherever I go, and am always game for trading music if I have my laptop with me. I'm also a vinyl collecting addict and like to hunt through old records stores for LPs wherever I go.
Books: the Dispossessed by Ursula Le Guin, 100 years of solitude, Salmon Rushdie, God of small things, Crime and Punishment. Also currently going through a phase of reading all of the Terry Pratchett Discworld series...
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Rough camping and hiking for 4 days in Patagonia. Tough work, and very very cold at night, but totally worth it.
I helped organise a beer festival last May. I spent 3 weeks of stress building up to it booking bands and DJs and soundsystem, sourcing beer, making homebrew to give out as free tasters, building a bar and making decorations inbetween doing a PhD. On the day it was so successful we sold out of beer by 7PM (the night went on till 1AM) and we had to call round all the local breweries getting in emergency beer!
