About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To see all of the continents while visiting as many countries as possible and meeting the peoples of the world. I believe that there are wonderful people out there who are open to learning about others & sharing their homes in the process.

ABOUT ME

Most people say that I definitely do not look my age, am very friendly and will strike up a conversation with almost anyone - basically that I like to talk! They will also say that I am the only person that they know who has numerous best friends and have had most of them since childhood. That I am a great mother, wife, and teacher and that I love my family, teaching, dancing, and traveling. My friends would also say that I have a great sense of humor, love to dance, and am basically am outdoor person. They would say that I am smart, hard-working, a great cook, am passionate about teaching mathematics, a strict disciplinarian with my students (until they get to know me) and am very devoted to anything that I do. They would also say that I am a devout catholic and am very active in my church; I am a social butterfly, love to party and have a good time, but do not drink, smoke or use drugs. Lastly, they would say that they admire me for being a strong woman who knows what I want out of life and will work untiringly to accomplish my goals. I love to spend any vacation from school traveling in and out of America, and would like to have a friend in every country that I visit. I am love to browse around thrift shops looking for good buys, and keep most of my clothes for ever! I am well-put together but am not vain - I am actually more on the tom boyish side and would climb a tree in a heart beat if it bears fruits that I like. I love most ball games and played basketball and netball for my country when I was younger. Another past time is cruising with my family on mega ships, though this is now infrequently with our children all being in college currently and having their own schedules. I basically love to travel, take tons of pics to share and is excited when I get to a new country and meet new and interesting people who share my interests and do not mind sharing about their country and ways of life.

PHILOSOPHY

Primarily, "life is short; enjoy it while you can!" As long as I can save enough to travel when I am not teaching - I will be happy doing one of my favorite things. Meeting new people and feeling at home in their homes is even better, since I can get first hand experience and information about their home land. Maybe if politicians share each others' couches, they make come to realize that we are really not that different and can get along, and find a balance due to commonalities. However, I believe in helping other along the way and not taking anything, anyone, or anyone's kindness for granted. Be respectful of each other's differences and learn to co-exist!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I plan to "surf" as well as host.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have had one CS experience and enjoyed the company of three surfers in the great city of Philadelphia, PA - the host, his room mate and another surfer. All of us were from varying and interesting back-grounds. What a great experience. As the host said, he would not have imagined that he would have a guest (me) from my country. This would hardly be likely without the concept of couch-surfing. Thanks a million, Darryl!

Interests

I am interested in traveling, meeting people, and learning as much as possible about the countries and cultures of the world. Opportunities to learn about and visit a new country excites me. I spend most of my time working on preparing for my students and teaching mathematics, but in my free time I travel extensively. While on visits, I take numerous pictures and use them to discuss my travels and the new things and places that I learn about with my relatives, friends and my students. In addition I like to listen to oldies music and to ballroom dance with my husband. I also like to cook and have others enjoy the meals that I prepare. When I am traveling I like to engage in leisure reading. To educate myself on almost any issue, I utilize the internet and spend endless hours researching educational and travel websites. I also love to go on escorted tours, but also like to explore countries on my own when I can.

Music, Movies, and Books

I am a lover of oldies music; singers such as Ben E. King, Brooke Benton, The temptations- basically the great Mowtown legends and those of the 60's such as Patsy Cline. I also love to dance to the disco sounds of the 70's and 80's. I have learned to appreciate christian contemporary music and love gospel music. I enjoy good movies and a nice easy read at times, but also enjoy doing educational research which helps to enlighten me, broaden my horizons, and improves my instruction. I also like to listen to documentaries and to read insightful books.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

First, one of the most amazing things that I have seen was a 20-ft Camoudi snake wrestling with a baby alligator in a creek in South America. I was awestruck as this battle went on for several minutes with the alligator losing its battle. Next, I was awestruck when I visited the Galapagos Islands. The wild life and the scenery looked like the land that time forgot. Last, I was awestruck when I visited Lake Powell and Bryce Canyon - these scenery represented beauty beyond compare and put the Grand Canyon in the shade. My first amazing sight was the Cape of Good Hope, in South Africa. I remembered the voyages of Christopher Columbus and the Cape's relevance to his discoveries in the "new" world.

Teach, Learn, Share

I am an American citizen, but was born in Guyana. No, I did not say Ghana (Africa), I said, G-U-Y-A-N-A! The only English-speaking country on the continent of South America. And, no! It is not an island! Bet you didn't know that! CS can provide individuals with first-hand learning experiences that some people are unable to get from any text book. CS also allows people to meet in a safe environment and engage and share interesting information about their country, its people, mores, social norms, and culture. It can also provide us with opportunities to socialize with people of different cultures, races, ethnic back-ground, and diversities. This was one of President Eisenhower's intention when he created the "People to People" program after the WW1 - the average man in the street can do what most politicians don't and can't do - bridge gaps, break-down barriers, and create friendships. Hopefully CS's don't spoil this - the idea is great even though some people (my family) may think it might be a crazy and even risky idea! Let's keep meeting people, making friendships, learning from each other, helping each other, and thus contribute to making the world a better place. Keep the chains of friendship going strong. C/Surfers keep it going!
