About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To not be another casualty of the US's overindulgence.

ABOUT ME

well, I hate doing these things, but I guess you should know:

I like reading and writing, specifically sci-fi, speculative fiction and non-fiction. I also love music, and I think that the joys of finding new music is one of life's greatest gifts.

I am introspective at times, but mainly I like meeting new people, doing my thing, fighting the power, and generally living life as if it were going to end tomorrow.

I live for memes, but can provide an in-depth philosophical analysis of just about anything. I like dumb things, I like deep things. I fancy stupid stuff, I fancy intelligent stuff. I guess it all depends on my mood. But I do believe you can be irresponsible while still being responsible. I could care less about having a job or doing what I'm supposed to, but the most important thing in life is to be the world you want to see, to live your values. I may not care about being "successful" by typical measures, but I do care about the world and the people in it, so I act to make the least negative impact while still enjoying all the world has to offer. Somehow this has gotten me to a great place where I'm making money while doing good. Not sure how it happened but I won't question it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Here are some of my favorite quotes:

A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.
-Oscar Wilde

Let’s plunge ourselves into the roar of time, the whirl of accident; may pain and pleasure, success and failure, shift as they will - it’s only action that can make a (wo)man.- Faust

Two or three things I know for sure, and one is that I'd rather go naked than wear the coat the world has made for me. -Dorothy Allison

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Most of the time I just like to meet people. I am often traveling too much to host (especially during the summer), but I host whenever I can!

The great thing about couchsurfing is all the open-minded and radical people on this site! And I guess I should put this disclaimer somewhere and here's as good a place as any:

If you believe that there is nothing wrong with society or that we've resolved all the problems of sexism, racism, classism, ableism, etc, or if you harbor any racist, sexism, homophobic views, PLEASE don't bother contacting me. Trust me, it's a waste of both of our times.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Surfed in Atlanta, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Dublin. Met up with some people in New York, Brussels, Amsterdam, Montréal, Berlin. Hosted folks from all over the world in Memphis. Haven't hosted yet here in Portland but am looking forward to soon!

Interests

I love things like music, culture, art, literature, etc. despite the fact that I have no talent for any of those things. I took a drawing class, I sucked. I took a painting class, I sucked. I decided to become a philosopher because I don't know how to write poetically. But just because I suck at all those things doesn't mean I enjoy them less while doing them.

I have a keytar and will hopefully be starting like 5 bands, plus 3 side projects in the near future. I also have an intense interest in social justice. If you hate racism/sexism/homophobia/agism or whatever other -isms that hurt people than I love you! If you indulge in one of those -isms in my presence expect to be called out on it!

Also I like bikes. I wanna marry them.

Music, Movies, and Books

My favourite music is:
- rap that speaks of revolutions (i.e. Dead Prez, The Coup, Aesop Rock)
- pop, 80's (specifically really bad 80's R&B), 90's(in a big way- ie Salt and Pepper), and yes I have a weakness for overrated dancy hipster bullshit (MGMT, Hot Chip, MIA, Chairlift, Passion Pit, Phoenix etc.)
-New Jack Swing and anything that attempts to mimic it. Music from times when black people wore Gheri curls and dressed with flair: Mtume, Zapp and Roger, Starpoint, Kool and the Gang, The Time, Rick James, Mary Jane Girls, the imitators: Chromeo, Wallpaper.
- Folk/Alt. Country/Americana Not pop country, but that heavy stuff that makes your soul weep, then makes it do a jig. (Patsy Kline, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, and I guess I can throw Band of Horses, Deer Tick and Fleet Foxes into that category too)
-60's black music like Motown, Philly Soul and artists like Sam Cooke (esp him!!), The Stylistics, Temptations, Smoky Robinson, The Supremes, etc.
- the madeup genre I refer to as "Girl-rock": Florence and the Machine, The Noisettes, The Sounds, A Fine Frenzy, etc.
- Occasionally I can jam out to punk and metal, but I have to be in the mood.

As for TV, I enjoy the things everyone does: Mad Men, Game of Thrones, House of Cards, the Walking Dead plus that one episode of Intervention... And I guess I should mention my obsession with documentaries somewhere: NOVA, anything David Attenborough or Carl Sagan has ever produced, those shows on Discovery, History, TLC about disgusting/disturbing medical ailments or about the world blowing up in glorious CGI fashion. As for films I'm admittedly a bit of a movie elitist so I list directors, not titles: Miike, Kurosawa, Jonze, Bergman, Almodovar, Goddard, Welles, Fellini, Gondry.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Lived in NY. Every day was crazier than the next. Also, went hashing (wikipedia that shit). Once we danced naked on a rooftop in a rainstorm with like 10 friends. And then I moved to Memphis and shit got real! And staying up for days on end in Berlin...the list is endless.

Teach, Learn, Share

My cooking skillz are legendary. I've tricked/converted many a meat-eater. One day I hope to start a restaurant.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I know a lot of things about really complex topics. I believe everyone is a wealth of knowledge and I'm sure we could teach each other.

Countries I’ve Visited

Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Ecuador, Germany, Jamaica, Netherlands, Panama, United Kingdom, United States
