One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I once visted a Maori village and was the chosen representative of my group to greet the village. It is customary that when visitors come one of the men in the village does an extremely intimidating dance with a large stick while yelling and sticking out his tongue and showing the whites of his eyes like in the haka. During the course of this he was starring at me the entire time while an older Maori women was telling me that he needs to know if we come in war or peace. She said that I needed to keep eye contact the entire time and that when he finally came to us he would put down a stick and a fern and I had to choose one and if I broke eye contact he may knock me in the head with his stick. The fern meant peace but the stick meant war and she made it very clear that if I choose the stick I would have to fight him. I chose the fern and our group had an enlightening perspective on a unique culture.
