About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Completely understand the use of the word "Doch"

ABOUT ME

Hi! I'm Sean. I'm in my early 20's, and while I'm originally from Massachusetts, these days I'm studying German Literature in Berlin. If my major wasn't a hint, I'm something of a nerd, though without the unbearable social awkwardness. I usually get along well with new people, whether we just meet as casual acquaintances or have a chance to get to know each other. Most importantly, for potential couch-hosts, I'm an easy guest. Just a bit of couch space, a friendly host, and maybe a shower.

PHILOSOPHY

Always a hard question for a philosophy major. Do I get technical and pretentious and say that I subscribe to a sort of materialist Spinoza metaphysics and adore Kierkegaard even though I don't more comfortable as the knight of infinite resignation than the knight of faith?

Or do I hit up the usual standards - I try to live a good life, I think everyone should live by the Golden Rule, why can't we all just get along? Both things are true.

In the end, maybe the safest thing to say is that I am almost a pathological optimist, and what I usually value most in the world are the things I find 'interesting', a sticky term whose actual definition still eludes me.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I was only introduced to Couch-Surfing recently, on a trip to Portugal where I met a bunch of people whose life-stories I just couldn't believe. I hope through couch surfing to meet some more crazy people, and maybe even some normal people, and help my life story become as interesting as the people who inspired me.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Never surfed a couch or had someone hang ten on mine, but I look forward to it. I have had wonderful days hanging out with Couch Surfers, though, and I find them wonderful people.

Debussy, They Might Be Giants, Life of Brian, Scotland PA, Cyrano de Bergerac, Terry Pratchett, Bach, The Band, The Birth of Tragedy, Haydn

A random list of ten things I like that popped into my head. Some of them are my favorites, some of them aren't, but the free association assortment is probably more useful a judge of character than anything I could have crafted.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I slept under a bush my first night in Germany, which is more surprising than amazing.

Still reeling from my trip to Barcelona, the most amazing thing that comes to mind is Expiatory Temple de la Sagrada Familia there. I am already planning to go back when it is done.
