I have no money, essentially, so couchsurfing seems pretty ideal. Plus, meeting amazing new people? You can't beat that. so bring it on!

Once hosted a buddy on a bike trip, and a Dutch exchange student who didn't have a permanent house yet.

Gone hiking through the Jura Mountains with friends pretending to be characters from Lord of the Rings. It's not NZ, but close enough!
