About Me
Hello!
I'm Hannah or Océanne as you would like to call me. I was born in Canada, but I hardly lived there. My childhood was spent mostly in the US because my father is American. I am a dual citizen. Now I've moved back home to Québec for my studies.
I've had the privilege of hanging out with so many different people from around the world. Even though my family was never on couch surfing, we traveled a lot around the US and Canada staying with various families along the way for a night or two and hosting people in our home. I feel blessed that my parents gave me such a rich cultural background so that I feel at ease and adaptable to any situation.
Now I am doing an internship in multimedia meaning that I work with a wide variety of stuff at a small multimedia ministry. I work with everything from the filming with cameras to editing, motion graphics and graphic design. I worked for almost three years in the US as a camera operator for a local TV station. Next year I will continue working at the media ministry where I am, but I will also start online studies for a bachelors in applied linguistics to satisfy my endless curiosity about language science. When I'm not at my internship, I teach English both online and in my home to get a bit of extra money for traveling.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I've heard so much about couchsurfing that I wanted to try it. Now that I'm old enough to travel on my own, but still a student, it gets a bit expensive to pay for hotels. So I thought I would check out couch surfing for my first trip abroad without my parents as hotels in Akureyri, Iceland are way past my budget, and i'd love to get to know local people as I'll be in Reykjavik to study Icelandic.
Raised to be a conscious traveler and also having hosted people with my parents, I know the amount of work that goes into it and I appreciate this community very much. I'm happy to pay a small amount or to help out with a project you may have.
I wish I could host you in my town in return, and I will as soon as I get my own place, but my single room student housing just won't let me at the moment. However I am still happy to show you around my town should you come.
Music, Movies, and Books
I love music! I listen to a lot of groups from all over the world. Currently my favourites are:
Iceland - Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmson og Ástiðir
Finland: Vesi Matti Loiri ja Tapio Rautavara
Québec: Le vent du nord, Gilles Vigneault, et Yves Deuteil
Even though I'm not a real movie buff, my top three movies are
Incindies
Les Choristes
Arrival (2016)
I've also been quite inspired by the Jacques Cousteau series of films and his books. I've read way too many books to even pick a favourite.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Oh it would be hard to pick! I've gone whale watching, SCUBA diving, helped at free healthcare expos, but I think the best is yet to come. The fact that I am alive is an amazing fact in itself. But one experience that has yet to grow old is the moment when I've been trying to explain a point to a student and they struggle for so long to understand but then that moment when everything clicks and you see it in their eyes.
Teach, Learn, Share
I can help you with English and French, help you learn some photography skills or Adobe Creative Cloud. I'm happy to share about my country and culture and to learn about yours. And if you can teach me some words in your language, that would be amazing!
What I Can Share with Hosts
I would be happy to share what I can. I am always happy to do some chores or a bit of work in exchange for my stay. I would enjoy sharing my culture with you and bringing a small gift or something from my region that you might not be able to get in your country so easily such as maple products. I'm also willing to help you improve your English or French.
