About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To wwoof and couchsurf across France, be spontaneous, go where the wind blows, find that little place where the beer flows like wine

ABOUT ME

So the first profile update in the years since I made this couchsurfing account --I haven't actually hosted anyone, for reasons of I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere, Ontario.

I lived for a few months recently in Sweden. Now that I worked the winter away back in Canada it is time to hit the trails again, this time to France. I'm going to be doing Wwoof-ing, but I'd enjoy meeting up with couch surfers.

I love to paddle --canoes, kayaks-- and am trying to find a way to make a living out of it, somehow.

PHILOSOPHY

Live simply. (Get your life down to a backpack, spend your time and money on people and places and doing things rather than owning things.)

Give people the benefit of the doubt. (Most people are nicer than you think they are. People are never as generous with their first opinions of others as they hope others are of them.)

Life is too short to drink bad wine (or beer, why do people drink Coors Light?)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Having been students for the last half dozen (it feels soo long, it was probably more like 5 and a half...) years, there hasn't been a time to participate. Sebastian's parents have been part of similar projects (they had an deer/wild-boar farm so they had travellers from all over the world stay with them as WOOF-ers).
In the future, when we are 'real people' that is to with 'jobs' that pay 'money' rather than peanuts (real people also BUY furniture when they move into an apartment rather than scavenging).

But, we're going to DO EUROPE (take that however you want) before becoming real people with couches to share. We have just bought some railpasses which will take us to strange, wonderful and random places, sleeping on the occasional couch, bench, street, hostel --consulting our magic eight-ball as we go, flipping our silver dollar.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

None so far with COUCHSURFING, but plenty of good times and friends made with another traveller/host programme (see above)
--looking forward to making new acquaintances!

Interests

FOOD! --we've both worked at restaurants (unfortunately, but such is life) in Canada. With so many different cultures in this country it all tends to mix --ever try stir-fry Schnizel? We love to hang out in kitchens and play with pans and spices (Andrew does the cooking, Sebastian makes the drinks and does the dishes)

OUTDOOR LIVING -- other people call this camping, the country we come from doesn't a lot in it to do and see (compared to, say, Germany) unless of course it's outside (rock to climb, lakes to sail, rivers to paddle, snow to board, trails to hike). Andrew lives 40 or 50 days a year in a tent while guiding canoe trips up north.

CULTURE AND LANGUAGE: Between the two of us we speak three languages (four if you include monosyllabic man-talk) Sebastian --German and English. Andrew --French and English. Nothing makes travel more fun than learning a new language and getting to know the culture of the person you're staying with. (This of course, is helped by an interest in food. See above.)

BASKETBALL: Sebastian played at a semi-pro level when he was living in Germany a few years ago.

Music, Movies, and Books

I studied literature at uni (whoop-dee-doo!) and loves British and Canadian lit, poetry, not to mention fantasy and science fiction.

I have my guitar handy at all times; nothing beats a good jam, and I've been writing my own songs for a few years now. Someday I'll make good on them.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The Broadback River in Quebec. See pictures.

Teach, Learn, Share

I have been paddling canoes since before he could walk (how Canadian is that?) and knows lots about the outdoor lifestyle.

Love to learn how to cook the local dish of your city or region.

Would love to learn how to make the Kessel run in less then 12 parsecs.

I can teach you some folk songs on the guitar.
