Probably all kinds of observation affect the measurement. But here's an interesting analogy, reflecting my opinion on self-description :

Let us imagine we wanna draw a landscape: so we place ourselves below in the plain to contemplate the nature of mountains, and in order to contemplate the plains, we place ourselves upon high mountains. Even so to understand nature of a person it needs someone from outside to suggest on the inside of this person.
