One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I with my friend Kirill organized youth Architectural Association of Khabarovsk in May, 2011. Our association - is a voluntary non-profit association of students and young professionals in the field of architecture and design.
One of the most original ideas was to create a library where will be collected specialized books and magazines about art, architecture and design. The library is in free access. Any interested member of the association is able to come to the KhAYA's library and read books there, as well as bring his own for the replenishment of the fund.
In bookstores or in the Internet you could find books about history of art or about architecture in common, but not about specific architectural bureau, its works and conception.
We remembered the movie “The Shawshank Redemption”. The main character, after he became a librarian, decided to ask for help different organizations even though he had no financial support. The purpose was – to replenish funds of library with books, and it didn’t matter whether they were old or new. We decided to turn to the international architectural community for help in forming the fund of our library. We have sent hundreds of letters to the publisher and architectural firms.
We’ve got responses. Books from Bjarke Ingels Group, David Chipperfield, Gary Chang, Olafur Eliasson, Bernard Tchumi and magazines from publishers Project Media, Speech: are in our library. It’s wonderful collection!
I believe that the library - this is one of the most wonderful and positive things that I did. This case is the embodiment of the incredible opportunities. It shows that you can create beautiful designs.
