About Me

My name is Sharon Amono. I’m a passionate traveler and I believe that meeting people from multicultural backgrounds is the perfect way to experience the world and the people. Learning about new cultures, languages and experiencing the natural beauty that a people are endowed with does not only give me new perspectives in life but also always excites me regardless of where I am. Whether it's hiking in the mountains, wandering through bustling city streets, driving through the game parks for game viewing, sitting by the lake or chasing waterfalls, I thrive on exploring the world’s beautiful wonders.
In my everyday life, I work as a lawyer which I enjoy, but my true joy comes from creating new networks through meeting and bonding with new people, creating memories and sharing stories. This also explains why I have recently ventured into the travel industry and run a startup Online Travel Agency(OTA) known as Lamara Travels and Bookings Limited. I’m open-minded, respectful, and always curious to hear different perspectives.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I firmly believe in leveraging travel to widen my perspectives on life, learn from people outside what I am used to, establish lasting connections and create and share unforgettable memories as opposed to just sight-seeing. Couchsurfing provides the rare opportunity to deeply and intimately experience and bond with a country or community through its people. I find that this is refreshing as it goes beyond the typical tourist path and dives into the real essence of a place through its people. I’d love to offer the same in return – to share my stories, listen to yours, and hopefully leave each encounter with new friends and memories that are cherished and etched in our souls for life.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

One amazing thing I have done is hiking through the Rwenzori Mountains National Park in Uganda, reaching the scenic and cascading Sebwe waterfalls that are perched on the Mountain Rwenzori ranges. The journey was challenging because of the rugged and undulating landscape coupled with verdant forests and riverine vegetation, occasionally rocky sections and damp, less maintained and slippery paths but the sense of accomplishment, natural beauty and breathtaking views made every step worth it even though the rain beat us while on the trail. It taught me resilience and how rewarding it is to push your limits, both physically and mentally. Along the way, I met locals who didn't just guide me through the forest to the falls but also shared stories about the region’s rich culture, the importance of the forest to their community in terms of providing medicine, firewood and sometimes food through the flora and fauna. They also shared stories of how the waterfalls help sustain local farming activities by feeding water into the local agricultural areas. This made my adventure a memorable one.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach:
I can teach you some basics of my native language; Acholi, some of our cultural practices like during marriage ceremonies, tips and tricks from my travel experiences, or show you how to prepare a delicious dish from my home country. I’d also be happy to share insights on how to navigate and avoid some pitfalls as a startup entrepreneur from lessons I have learnt as a travel agent in the past one year.

Learn:
I’m always excited and curious to learn about new cultures, languages, local traditions and hidden gems in a country or community. I’d love to learn some phrases in your language, peculiar customs and traditions especially those relating to rites of passage and marriage. I'd love to learn about your favorite spots in the city, hear about the places and hotels that have left an indelible mark on you in your travels and how you love to spend your free time.

Share:
I’d love to share stories from my experience as a startup entrepreneur, my travels and my work as a lawyer; whether it’s the unbelievable demands from travelers, quirky experiences I’ve had exploring hotels, the cultural insights I’ve gained along the way or the vulnerable and marginalised women, men and children I have worked with to ensure they have access to justice(challenges, joys and lessons that have come with that). I also enjoy sharing recommendations for future trips, sharing a good meal and exploring new places together, and exchanging recommendations for future trips. I believe that being vulnerable through sharing our stories and experiences helps us strengthen our connections.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I am respectful, tidy, and considerate of personal space. As a guest, I understand that being in someone’s home is a privilege, not a right, and I aim to be a pleasant and easy-going guest. I’d be happy to contribute to the chores like cooking meals, keeping the house clean and organized and generally helping out whichever way I can. I'd also be happy to keep my host engaged by sharing my stories and volunteering when needed. In the event that my host is interested in learning more about Uganda, I would be happy to share insights and even plan future trips together.
