I grew up in Taiwan and lived there through college. The decade after that, without really planning it, life has brought me to Japan, Portugal, and the US from Chicago to Silicon Valley.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I wanted to learn Portuguese so bad that I got enrolled in a year-long Portuguese language program in Coimbra, Portugal in 2009. I didn't know anyone in Portugal, knew very little the language, never been to Portugal at that time. Also smartphone was not a common thing yet back then. I printed the itinerary from Google Maps on paper and booked a cheap hotel in Coimbra for 2 nights, that's it.

I traveled to Macau for 2 times just to get my visa. I traveled from my hometown in Taiwan for 38 hours through planes, trains, and taxi, with a large suitcase, the printed itinerary, English and broken Portuguese. In 2 days, without knowing anyone, I found a place to stay by calling a landlord through an ad on an electricity pole from a telephone booth. She didn't speak English but somehow I was able to communicate and get the address right with my broken Portuguese.
Looking back, I am like, "Wow, I guess that's the audacity in early 20s."
