About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Summiting

ABOUT ME

Probably that I move quickly, which is true most of the time, and that if I'm on my feet I'm going somewhere or dancing. If I'm not on my feet, I'm on a fast bike, or I'm in between dance moves, or I'm sitting down, thinking. I do a lot of thinking, mostly trying to resolve contradictions, and trying to figure out what's going on here. My big question is still: what is this? It's not a question that I worry about as much as revel in, and as I get older I'm less convinced that I'm really looking for an answer.

Interests

These are my values: (1) Beauty, (2) Excellence, (3) Speed, (4) Strength. This is what grabs my attention and makes my life engaging. I find these values expressed particularly in dance -- especially ballet and modern -- in bicycling quickly, in well-argued propositions, well-calculated political moves, and sprinting.

I spend much of my time thinking, reading, writing, teaching. I'm a graduate student. When I'm not doing these things, I'm usually in between them, or I'm drinking a beer with a friend, or I'm enjoying a strange film I've never heard of, or eating in a restaurant whose name I can't pronounce.

Music, Movies, and Books

Haroun and the Sea of Stories

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Hiking around in the Alps. Unbelievably beautiful up there, and not in the sense that this is a nature external to us, but that people live there, in this reality.

Biking to Portland from SF over nine days through cold rain, pushing a Century through the last day, to arrive in the dark at a house of friends I hadn't seen for years, who took me in without hesitation.

The fisherman who let me sleep in his boat on Lake Titicaca after only knowing me for a couple hours.
