About Me

ABOUT ME

I earned my degree in philosophy, studied abroad in Switzerland, taught English in France, worked at a law firm in California, and am now back teaching English in Africa.

I love learning about and experiencing other cultures. If I don't travel for too long, I feel like my world is starting to shrink--the last thing I want to do is start thinking that my way of living is "normal."

PHILOSOPHY

Love, and everything that entails.

Interests

I love music, especially jazz, soul, funk, bluegrass and country (yeah I know that's weird). I've been playing saxophone for 15 years now, and while I won't be pursuing it as a career, I still plan on playing as long as I can. I've also found that concerts are a great way to meet amazing people.

I read as much as I can. I just finished War Junkie by Jon Steele (it's fantastic, if you were wondering) and try to always keep some philosophy on my shelf. I especially love the ancients and think Aristotle was right about pretty much everything.

I'm into analytic philosophy and thinking about life's more important questions. I think one of the most important things to do in life is to understand other people's perspectives. Too many problems come about because people don't consider how others think. Whether it's an author I'm reading, a musician I'm listening to or a friend I'm meeting, I like to do my best to see life from their eyes.

Lately, I've developed a bit of an interest in Africa, its peoples and culture. I got involved in the African neighborhood of my hometown, taught English to East Africans and made a lot of friends along the way - and now I've finally made the move there myself!

Whiskey! I found my love for whiskey in the Belfast Int'l Airport, where a kind old Irish man at the duty-free store gave me a free tasting. Ever since, I've tasted hundreds of whiskeys trying to develop my palate and explore the vast array of flavors. I'm particularly fond of scotch, but I'm trying to try more bourbon and Irish whiskey as well.

And does laughing count? I love anything witty. If you get dry humor, you get me.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

My friends and I explored the ruins of 19th century bunkers on the Latvian coast, one of the cooler adventures I've had. Also on the list is playing at frozen beaches in Estonia, New Year's Eve/Hogamany in Edinburgh, and hiking through the mountains in Albania.

Teach, Learn, Share

I love sharing music! I listen to a lot of lesser-known artists, and I take every opportunity to share them with people and pick up some of their favorites as well. I'm not a professional musician, but I still enjoy talking about jazz and improvisation.

If you happen to have an interest in whiskey or philosophy then you're in luck!
