About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to learn and see everything and to have fun, make new friends and lots of art along the way.

ABOUT ME

SmittyBuckler.com (i know my site is down rn. It will be back up soon. )
This is pretty old but not that much has changed tbh. hmu at fb:@smitty.buckler tw: @smitzter ig: @radcogs
I am a person who doesn't fit well into summaries. I do a lot. I make art pretty much daily (visual and performance). I love the sciences, especially botany, biology and medicine. I am really into Ayurvedics. I am a transgender queer.

I am very active. I am really into my bike. I like to surf, skateboard, rollerskate, snowboard, garden, really anything with nature or science. I love music, I love to dance.

PHILOSOPHY

I am a queer, polyamorous, mostly vegan, bike riding punk who studies buddhism. My general philosophy is do no harm. It is one of the basic principles of medicine and buddhism. The world we live in today it is hard not to do any harm. Basic needs like food and shelter cause harm to the environment. But I do the best I can. I like the four agreements as life rules. I believe in being nonjudgemental and walking my talk. I believe in not having opinions as much as deconstructing issues. I like to unpack things.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I am not sure what I am suppose to write here. lolz.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I was raised by hippies then became a punk. Now I am just a nerd. Basically couchsurfing has been a major part of my life. I have traveled pretty extensively along the west coast and I have always been able to find friends or friends of friends to stay with. Now I am traveling further and further away from home and don't have the same connections so I am here on this site, giving it a try.

Interests

medicine, biology, ayurvedics, art, printmaking, stencils, drawing, comics, animation, puppets, dance: currently lyricism, hip hop/turf, aerial acrobatics, partner acrobatics, surfing, skateboarding, bikes, unicycles, sail boats. really anything that has wheels or glides or puts me in the air. queers. activism, anti-oppression, organizing, collectives, food politics: local, vegan, whole, access for marginalized communities. Learning how to say things without as much jargon. Conflict resolution, Non-violent communication, boundaries, co-counseling... & more we can geek out about in person.

Music, Movies, and Books

On my reading shelf right now I have: anatomy for the artist & a bunch of other drawing books, bicycling the backroads of NW Oregon, plant identification, the Oregon Non-Profit Management, a birding book, Ayurvedics, bike rides around Portland, Pirates and Buccaneers. In storage and that I have read are the typical feminist spanning 1st wave to trans feminism, gender and sexuality theorists. I am partial to Leslie Fienberg, Audre Lorde, Dorothy Allison, Bell Hooks, Judith Butler, Augusto Boal, and too many more to type out. I just got Angela Davis' the Meaning of Freedom (signed!) and was able to free box score Janet Mock's Redefining Realness. I also like manga and plethora of my writing from my friends and zines.

I like a lot of music. From Hip-hop to riot grrl to Motown to Classical. I've been on a mainstream hip-pop kick lately. I have also been listening to a lot of Motown and Classical especially Rachel's. My favorite is to see my friends bands play.

Anything by Hayao Myazaki. I watch a lot of nature/ science/ social justice documentary shows. Sometimes a little sci-fi. I love Dr.Who scarf years. I also have a place of joy in my heart for British TV: Red Dwarf and Young Ones call to mind. Oh and cheesy horror movies. And other odd movies, Angel in America & such. Ghost in the Machine. (Probably) my favorite movie ever is silhouette stop motion animation by lotte reinger, Prince Achmed. & all the 80s favs of course: The Dark Crystal, The Neverending Story, Beetlejuice, The Labyrinth, The Night Before Christmas, Heathers, The Breakfast Club, Goonies, Gremlins, etc.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I feel pretty lucky in that even though I didn't grow up with a lot of money I have had a lot of great experiences. I have been to Alaska twice, once I drove the AlCan to get there. I have been all the way south to Mexico. I have traveled a lot on the west coast. But honestly the most amazing things I have seen have been in my own backyard so to speak. I grew up in the mountains where it was possible to go places that aren't tainted by humans. Those places are breathtaking.

Teach, Learn, Share

Ooooh! I spent my 20s making fancy food and I love to cook for people. Most of my hosts have always said come back & visit & cook for me any day. Also I love skillshares! I organized a FreeSkool for a long time and dig alternative pedagogies. I am a big reader so I have a lot of kinda random knowledge about things. I mostly teach about anti-oppression, facilitation and screenprinting, drawing, bookarts... but I have way more than that to share (see above.)
