About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To travel as far as my pennies will take me, experience some madness along the way and have an absolute blast in the process...

ABOUT ME

I had always talked about going travelling when I was still in Scotland but my job was good, I needed to save more money, what would I do without haggis, do people even know how to ceilidh dance in foreign lands, blah, blah, blah but eventually booked a flight to Mexico in 2008.

7 months in Mexico City turned into an amazing year and a half of avoiding becoming road kill on the walk to work, tequila, tacos, learning to communicate (I arrived without a word of Spanish, some people call it brave, I call it stupid), amazing people, some lows, a bzillion highs, then finally re-packed the backpack in April said hasta luego to Mexico, went to Peru for a month (which completely blew me away!) then headed back to Scotland.

After Mexico and Peru (and several other places for shorter periods), I definitely developed the travel bug and Oz was next on the list. So after a summer back in Scotland generally not being able to feel my hands or feet cos I was so cold I then headed off in the direction of the sun, spent 16 months in Oz, slowly heading back towards Scotland via South East Asia and now I've found myself back in Aberdeen...

I'm a friendly, sociable sort of lass, am always up for good conversation and swapping of stories, I love a good bit of banter, anyone with a good sense of humour, I am not easily offended and always up for a laugh. I am also quite happy with my own company. Being Scottish, I find it hard to say no to a good sesh once in a while!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Unfortunately my current living situation means I can't host at the moment but promise to give back when I can!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've loved it so far and met some amazing, generous, fascinating, fun folk.

Interests

I have developed a slight obsession with learning Spanish. There is something about the buzz you get from being able to communicate in another language and actually be understood (even with a million mistakes in between), especially with people who you would otherwise never have had the chance to talk to.

I love exploring, getting lost and stumbling across random places, I love markets and could spend hours and hours wandering through them. I love learning about and experiencing other cultures and talking to locals. I am a country girl at heart so love getting out of the city and into the great outdoors, spending the day hiking in the middle of nowhere.

Music, Movies, and Books

Favourite books include Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks, A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee, Man and Boy by Tony Parsons. I also like a bit of non-fiction especially about the places I'm going/have been e.g. The Private Life of Chairman Mao (heavy going but very interesting) and Che Guevara, the Life of a Revolutionary (I developed a big Che Guevara crush after reading this and being in Cuba - ignoring the fact that he'd be over 80 now and how many people he killed).

Music... a little bit of everything from Leonard Cohen to the Killers, Kings of Leon, MGMT, Ludovico Einaudi (incredible pianist), Stevie Wonder (legend), Faithless, techno, Mumford and Sons, dubstep, Wham (cheesy I know but there's just no way you can put on Wham and it doesnt make you feel good, you know it's true)...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The Inca Trail was mind-blowing, the Great Wall is one of the most amazing things I've seen and two days on the back of a motorbike visiting hill tribes in Burma is one of the best experiences of my life and unlikely to be topped.

Countries I’ve Visited

Austria, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China, Cuba, Germany, Ghana, Greece, India, Laos, Myanmar, Netherlands, Peru, Singapore, Spain, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, United States, Viet Nam

Countries I’ve Lived In
