About Me

CURRENT MISSION

discharging Clip-jawed Fluxtrunions

ABOUT ME

I'm interested in meeting people who live in interesting places.

Guide books can give you a picture, review, and price list of restaurants and tourist traps, but a five minute conversation with someone who lives there is far better, IMHO. Not that hosting is about playing tour guide, but the social sharing is why we're here, no?

PHILOSOPHY

One thing I've learned from moving around is that I don't need nearly as much stuff as I once thought I did. I'm at a point now where I think I could live with just my clothes and my laptop (and occasionally my phone, at least to take a picture or two).

I believe in leaving things nicer than when you found them (a lesson I learned in Boy Scouts).

I'm not a needy person in attention, space, or things.
What I am is clean, quiet (when appropriate), and considerate.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I just moved into a tiny apartment in a commercial district of Matsuyama, so at the moment I can't host.

I still enjoy travel though, and I'm a pretty light traveler.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

While short on experience with the Couchsurfing site proper, I can honestly say there's not a couch on which I've independently crashed that wouldn't welcome me back.

Interests

Right now, my passion is for cycling. I've entered a few races in my area of Japan, and while my times are not competitive per se, I really enjoy my time in the saddle.

I used to race my car on autocross tracks when I lived in Las Vegas, and I'm a bit of a gear head at times.

I also really enjoy hiking and backpacking (though I haven't done any backpacking since coming to Japan five years ago).

My university degree and professional experience stateside was in computer networking and support, so I know a fair bit about computers and the internet as well.

Music, Movies, and Books

I can't wait for book six of the Song of Ice and Fire series to come out. I read the first five books over the course of a few months last year after the Game of Thrones TV show came out.

I'm currently watching Dr. Who, Downton Abbey, Dexter, and Game of Thrones.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Visiting India in 2003 really opened up my eyes, as it was my first visit to a non-Western country.

My proudest recent achievement was riding a century ride (100 miles / 160 kilometers in one day).

Okay, here are two of my favorite Windows shortcuts:
Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open up the Windows Task Manager
Ctrl + [Number Pad "plus sign"] to expand every column in a window to the size of its largest member
